STOCKTON, Calif. – In second round action at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational the Washington State University men’s golf team carded a 289 (+5) and is currently tied for second place in the 11-team tournament. The Cougars are 4-under (564) through two rounds, with 18 holes left to play. WSU is tied with Grand Canyon and just one stroke back from first-place Denver (-5, 563).
“Our back nine was great,” Cougar Head Coach Garrett Clegg said. “I think we came out a little flat and let teams make up some ground on us, but we are in a position to have a fantastic tournament. We’re looking forward to having a good round tomorrow and finishing the fall strong.”
WSU senior Charlie Mroz led the Cougars. After finishing 5-under (66) in the opening round, Mroz carded a second-round 72 (+1) and sits tied for second on the leaderboard. Mroz is just one stroke back from tournament leader Petter Mikalsen of Denver (-5, 137).
Cougar freshmen Derek Bayley and Brian Mogg are three strokes back from Mroz. Bayley’s afternoon was highlighted by two eagles on the par-71 course at the Stockton Golf and Country Club. Bayley notched eagles on hole 2 and hole 12, carding a second-round 72 (+1). Mogg finished 2-over (73), as both are 1-under (141) in the tournament and tied for 15th.
Redshirt-senior Sang Lee carded a second-round 73 (+2), matching Mogg. The score brings Lee’s two-round total to 145 (+3). Lee is currently tied for 29th. Senior Michael Anderson matched Mroz and Bayley, shooting 1-over (72) on the day. Anderson (+7, 149) is currently tied for 46th.
In total, the Cougars boast four golfers in the top 20, including redshirt-senior Alex Wagner, who is competing as an individual. Wagner shot 1-under (70) on the day, and is currently tied for 17th.
