Fall Rowing Season Culminates at Head of the Lake

SEATTLE – The Washington State University women’s rowing team wrapped up the 2014 fall season with one win and two second-place finishes Sunday morning at the Head of the Lake at Seattle. The Cougars launched three varsity eight boats in the three-mile race that takes place in both Lake Union and Lake Washington.

“This was a really strong outing for us,” said Washington State Head Coach Jane LaRiviere. “We are very motivated heading into winter training.”

The Cougar varsity eight (coxswain – Rebecca Burns, Savannah Davison, Mihaela-Teodora Berindei, Nicole Hare, Kellen Srb, Jordan Watson, Lucie Weissova, Morgan Cathrea, Mickey Aylard) finished second on the three-mile course with a time of 18:09.75, 10 seconds behind Washington. The Cougars defeated third-place Gonzaga by approximately 30 seconds and also out-stroked Portland, Old Dominion, Seattle, and Western Washington.

The second varsity eight (coxswain – Jenna Mangiagli, Kayla Wakulich, Isabella Nicosia, Ieva Adomaviciute, Lori VerMurlen, Noel Christiansen, Carter Marks, Emily Morrow, Jessica Newson) also took second behind cross-state rival Washington. With a time of 18:32.90, the Cougars finished ahead of Gonzaga, Old Dominion, University of Puget Sound, Portland, Oregon, and Pacific Lutheran. The crew finished just six seconds behind Washington.

Washington State’s third varsity eight (coxswain – Julia Monroe, Megan McDonald, Sarah Steger, JoAnne Bates, Katrina Tarrant, Jessi Howe, Kotryna Lasaite, Krista Lizardi, Kim Coon) wrapped the regatta with a win. The Cougar crew out-stroked nine boats, including Washington and Gonzaga, and finished with a time of 18:57.07.

The Cougars will travel to California to open the spring season at the Pac-12 Challenge, March 28 at Redwood Shores, Calif.
