Austin and Sohn Take Doubles Title at Wildcat Invitational
TUCSON, Ariz. – Junior Shayne Austin and freshman Hanna Sohn finished off their impressive pursuit to the doubles championship in the Wildcat Doubles bracket, defeating Marquette’s Erin Gebes and Ana Pimienta 8-4 Sunday on the final day of the Wildcat Invitational.
In the back draw portion of doubles play, Devin Chypyha and Inge Hendrikx dropped a close one to UTEP’s Meza and Santos, 8-7(4).
In the singles portion of the event, Sohn dropped a tough three-set affair to New Mexico’s Rachana Baht in the finals of the Cardinal Singles bracket 7-6, 4-6, 6-1. That marked just her first loss on the weekend after beginning 7-0 in tournament play. Hendrikx lost a tight match to Mississippi State’s Corder 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in the finals of the Navy Singles bracket.
Austin and Devin Chypyha also fell in their respective matches in the back draw portion of singles play 6-4, 6-0, and 6-3, 6-4 respectively.
“It was a successful weekend because I got to see all the new girls play,” head coach Vicky Maes said. "It was nice to play a home event and we found out that we have a lot of things to work on. The kids are enthusiastic and they are very coachable. I saw a lot of good things.”
The Wildcats will be back in action on Thursday, October 16 in San Diego Calif. as they will compete in the ITA Regional Tournament
