BERKELEY – California sophomore Mercedes Jefflo was honored as the Scholar-Athlete of the Game last week at the California-UCLA football game at Memorial Stadium.
One student-athlete is selected each game by the Athletic Study Center through a nomination process with five main criteria. The Scholar-Athlete of the game is selected based upon:
• Academic skill she/he developed through preparation and practice

• Achievement reached in balancing sport and school
• Positive measured outcome through qualitative and quantitative feedback
• Leadership trait that has been demonstrated and is impactful
Jefflo played in 28 games with 14 starts last season as a freshman, averaging 4.3 points and 2.8 rebounds per game. Her career-high came in a 14-point effort at Georgetown, and the pulled down a career-best 11 rebounds against Idaho. In her collegiate debut, Jefflo registered seven steals to go with nine points. She finished the year with 17 blocked shots – the second-most on the team – despite being the third-shortest player on the roster.
