STANFORD, Calif. – California shot a 6-over 290 in the first day of competition at the annual Stanford Intercollegiate held at the par-71 Stanford Golf Course.
Four Bears – Hannah Suh, Alice Jeong, Lucia Gutierrez and Jo Ee Kok – shot 1-over 72’s Friday on a day that saw low scores throughout the stacked field of top teams. UCLA sits atop the team leaderboard with a 279 (-5) with Stanford and Northwestern tied for second at 282 (-2).
“We have some work to do in the next couple of days,” McDaniel said. “Looking at the field, we’ll need to make more birdies and shave off some wasted strokes. All in all, we had four players play really solid. I know everyone wants to try and get it under par. It’s a tight race when you have all of these good players around.”
Gutierrez, Jeong, Kok and Suh each sit tied for 28th on the individual leaderboard, although Kok’s score does not count towards California’s team score as she is competing as an individual this weekend.
“I felt like we were all really consistent,” Suh said of the performances. “Three of us shot 1-over, so it was a really consistent round overall.”
Suh, along with Gutierrez, hit three birdies on the day by hitting under-par on the 7th, 12th and 18th holes. Competing in her first tournament of the season, Gutierrez scored birdies on the 4th, 8th and 12th holes to score a 1-over 72 in her first competitive round of the year.
“It was amazing to get back out there,” Gutierrez said. “I was really hoping to get back out here by Stanford. I’m just grateful to be playing. It was a great round. I’m really happy to be playing, and I’m getting more consistent and getting my game back.”
Jeong remained consistent throughout the day by hitting par on 13 holes with her two birdies coming on the par-5 7th and 12th holes.
“Today’s round went OK,” Jeong said. “I grinded out to shoot 1-over, but we’ll see what happens tomorrow.”
Freshman Marthe Wold also hit three birdies on the day and finished tied for 59th individually with a 74 (+3) with a triple-bogey on the par-4 9th obscuring what was otherwise a highlight of a day. Wold birdied the 4th, 7th and 16th to continue her solid freshman fall campaign.
Junior Carly Childs shot a 78 (+7) after a rough front nine, but the Bay Area native settled down on the back nine. Overall, Childs carded four birdies on the day – the most of the Golden Bears – with under-par shots on the 1st, 7th, 11th and 16th holes.
The Bears tee off on the 10th hole beginning at 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning in the second round. California will be paired with Arizona State and UC Davis Saturday.
