Alice Jeong Matches School Record At Schooner Fall Classic

Oct 6, 2014

NORMAN, Okla. – Redshirt freshman Alice Jeong matched the California record for lowest round under par Monday when she shot a 6-under 64 in the final round of the Schooner Fall Classic held at the par-70 Belmar Golf Club.

Jeong, who helped lead the Golden Bears to a sixth place finish at the stacked field, matched the four-year old record set by Joanne Lee at the Pac-10/SEC Challenge on November 5, 2010, when Lee shot a 6-under 65 at the par-71 Stanford Golf Course in Palo Alto. Her 6-under 64 was only bested by individual leaderboard winner Ally McDonald's (Mississippi State) 63, also shot on Monday.

“Alice’s round today was phenomenal,” California head coach Nancy McDaniel said. “She made seven birdies in her last 11 holes. That was pretty good stuff. She’s been patient all week to go from 80 to 72 to 64. I know that she’s working hard on getting herself back to a high standard.”

The Golden Bears took sixth in the tough field with a 54-hole score of 285-282-278=844 (+4), consistently lowering their score with each successive round. Mississippi State won the team title with an 818 (-22) and was followed by Arkansas (836, -4) and Texas A&M (828, -2) to round out the top three.

“We were really encouraged by our trip to Oklahoma,” McDaniel said. “Especially with the under-par rounds and having them represent four different people on the team. We know it’s there. We’re getting going right now, and it’s a good time to get things rolling. They handled themselves really professionally in a way that we can tell that we’re ready for something good to happen as an entire team. We had spurts with two people each day, but we’re getting ready for something good to happen to this team. They’re working really hard.”

Junior Hannah Suh earned her first top 10 finish of the season after carding a 208 (-2) with her final round 72. Freshman Marthe Wold finished tied for 24th individually with a 212 (+2) after nearly earning her second top 20 finish of her career after a quadruple-bogey on the final par-4 18th hole moved her from 1-over to a 5-over 75 in Monday’s final round.

“Marthe was right there,” McDaniel said. “She had a really rough last hole and had a bounce that turned into a quad. Otherwise, she would be in the top 20. She had 53 holes that were great in this tournament. Those things happen, and she’ll bounce back. Her contribution as a freshman this week really shined.”

Junior Carly Childs shot a 1-under 69 Monday to finish tied for 40th with a 215 (+5), finishing one stroke ahead of Jeong who carded a 216 (+6) to tie for 43rd. Senior Jo Ee Kok also had her best round Monday with a 73 to finish with a 224 (+14).

Only two fall tournaments remain for California. The Bears next compete at the Stanford Intercollegiate from October 17-19.

“Stanford is a favorite course of ours,” McDaniel said. “It’s a fair course, and it’s one we are familiar with. A couple of players, Carly and Hannah, have played it plenty of times being Northern California junior players.”
