Cross Country Wraps Up Pac-12 Championships

Oct 28, 2022

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The University of Arizona Cross Country men placed seventh at the Pac-12 Championships on Friday, while the women placed ninth.

"Today was a great showing by the Wildcats," said Head Coach Bernard Lagat. "We had the women's team finishing ninth overall and the men's team finishing seventh overall. That is a big, big-time step because we have young and talented athletes who were not even running here last year."

Ian Sanchez Lopez once again finished first for the men's team with a time of 24:13.6 in the 8k. Cooper Quigley finished second overall for the team with a time of 24:43.5, and Noah Jodon's time of 24:51.5 helped him place third. Iker Sanchez Lopez (25:00.5) and Brennan Foody (25:16.4) were the team's fourth and fifth place finishers.

Grace Driskill led the women's side in the 6k, placing first for the team with a time of 20:31.2. Sailor Hutton finished closely behind as the team's second runner, with a time of 20:41.2. Alisa Lyesina ran a time of 20:47.5 to place third for the team. Mia Chavez, with a time of 21:10.8, and Johnnie Mitchell, with a PR time of 21:11.9, finished fourth and fifth for the team.

The men's team finished seventh overall out of their nine competitors with a team score of 213. The women's side placed ninth overall in a field of 12 with their team score of 256. Both races saw multiple course records broken in a very competitive field.

"The team is really looking forward to running again at the West Regionals which is coming up in about two weeks," said Lagat. "We're going to take it one day at a time. We had a good showing today but it's going to be even better as we go forward."
