UCLA's Looney named Pac-12 Men's Basketball Player of the Week
SAN FRANCISCO - UCLA freshman forward Kevon Looney has been named Pac-12 Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for play from Jan. 5-11, the Conference office announced today in a vote of media who cover Pac-12 men’s basketball.
The Milwaukee, Wis., native averaged 21.0 points, 13.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists in UCLA’s two home wins against STANFORD and CALIFORNIA last week. Looney had a season-high 27 points and 19 rebounds in the Bruins’ 86-81, double-overtime win against Stanford, becoming UCLA’s first player to record at least 27 points and 19 rebounds in one game since Ed O’Bannon had 28 points and 19 rebounds against Stanford on Feb. 26, 1994. The freshman followed up with 15 points and seven rebounds in the 73-54 win over California, adding two assists, two steals and a block. Looney is the only freshman in the nation currently averaging a double-double, with season marks of 13.1 points and 10.3 rebounds per game.
The honor marks Looney’s first-career weekly award. It is UCLA’s 58th player of the week selection all-time.
UCLA travels across town to play at USC on Wednesday, Jan. 14. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2 with a tip-off time of 6 p.m. PT.
