Arizona State's Samantha Noennig took home the 2019 NCAA Shot Put Championship after throwing a personal best 18.14m (59 ft. 6.25 in.) at the 2019 NCAA Track and Field Championships. After her championship performance, she credited the win to inspiration from former teammate Maggie Ewen, who won the 2018 NCAA Shot Put Championship. Noennig entered the meet as the fifth seed and found herself in seventh place heading into the final, but rocketed into the lead on her fifth throw. She also won the indoor shot put title in March with what was her personal best at the time on a throw of 17.91m (58 ft. 9.25 in.)
