After two years of construction in Pasadena, the first Rose Bowl game pitted USC against Penn State in 1923. When Penn State showed up late citing traffic as the issue, then USC head coach Elmer Henderson confronted Nittany Lion head coach Hugo Bezdek and the two had to be separated. USC got its revenge by winning the first Rose Bowl 14-3.
