Only 26 days after the attack on Pearl Harbor, military officials urged the Rose Bowl to move the game away from the West Coast in fear of further attacks. What resulted was the only time the Rose Bowl was played outside of Pasadena, Calif. The Beavers traveled to Durham, N.C. to play undefeated Duke. Despite the long trek, underdog Oregon State prevailed in a 20-16 upset.
