Mark Bingham was a two-time rugby national champion at Cal who lost his life on Sept. 11, 2001, as a passenger on United Airlines Flight 93. Bingham and fellow passengers attempted to retake the plane from the hijackers, and though unsuccessful, they managed to veer into a field in Pennsylvania instead of Washington D.C. A rugby tournament has since been named after Bingham and is played every two years in his memory.
