Pac-12 announces softball all-conference honors

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - In a vote of the Conference's head coaches, ARIZONA STATE senior catcher Amber Freeman has been named the 2013 Pac-12 Player of the Year. OREGON senior Jessica Moore  was voted the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year. WASHINGTON senior catcher Shawna Wright was tallied the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year, Kayla Bonstrom earned Freshman of the Year honors and OREGON head coach Mike White has garnered Coach of the Year honors, as Commissioner Larry Scott announced the softball all-conference selections Wednesday. OREGON junior designated player Alexa Peterson was crowned the Pac-12 Batting Champion with a conference-leading .471 batting average.

Pac-12 Player of the Year -- Amber Freeman, Arizona State

The Lakewood, Calif., native ranks in the top 10 in the Pac-12 in four different offensive categories including slugging percentage (.745, fourth), RBI (57, fourth), hits (62, eighth) and home runs (16, tied fourth). The sophomore catcher primarily catches for teammate Dallas Escobedo one of the Pac-12's top pitchers. Freeman is in the top 25 all-time at ASU in RBI (98) and homers (74). She hit a career high five RBI this season on Feb. 15 against then-No. 15 Michigan. She was a Top 25 Finalist for USA Softball's Player of the Year.

Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year -- Jessica Moore, Oregon

Moore earned the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year honor for the first time in Oregon history. She is also a finalist for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year. Moore has a .159 ERA ranking second in the Pac-12. She has pitched 171.2 innings striking out 163 batters and has totaled 25 wins on the season. She has held her opponents to a .211 batting average. The Sutter, Calif., native was named Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week twice this season.

Pac-12 Freshman of the Year -- Kayla Bonstrom, Stanford

The third Cardinal in Conference history and first since 2009 to earn Freshman of the Year, Bonstrom is averaging .414 at the plate leading Stanford and has appeared in 55 games this season. She tallies 65 hits including 11 doubles and eight home runs. She boasts a team high .650 slugging percentage. Her RBI of 51 is also a team leading number and she tallied an on base percentage of .497 to lead the Cardinal. On the defensive side of the ball Bonstrom boasts a .982 fielding percentage and has contributed in eight double plays. She ranks second on the team in putouts with 210.

Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year -- Shawna Wright, Washington

Wright is the second Washington player to ever earn Defensive Player of the Year. The junior catcher boasts a .994 fielding percentage. She ranks second on the team and fourth in the Conference in putouts with 318. Wright has appeared in 53 games this season and has tallied a .278 batting average. She hit the game winning solo walk off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning against California on May 10.

Pac-12 Coach of the Year -- Mike White, Oregon

White has earned the first Coach of the Year honor in the history of Oregon softball. White led the Ducks to the first ever Pac-12 Championship after tallying a 19-5 Conference record and a 46-9 overall record. The fourth year head coach has led Oregon to a No. 3 national ranking and a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament. White has tallied a 169-64 career record and looks to lead the Ducks to their second consecutive Women's College World Series this season.

Pac-12 Batting Champion -- Alexa Peterson, Oregon

The sophomore outfielder from Placentia, Calif., has been named the Pac-12 Batting Champion after hitting .442 during the regular season, an average that ranks fourth nationally. She ranks first in the Conference in on-base percentage boasting a .574 percentage. The junior tallied 59 runs in her 139 at-bats, with a total of 31 runs scored. She also recorded 12 doubles, one triple and 12 home runs alongside 39 runs batted in.
