Nov 12, 2013

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - In a vote by the Conference coaches, WASHINGTON STATE senior midfielder Micaela Castain was named Pac-12 Player of the Year, UCLA freshman forward Darian Jenkins was named Pac-12 Freshman of the Year and WASHINGTON STATE head coach Keidane McAlpine was named Pac-12 Coach of the Year, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today. The All-Pac-12 teams were also announced.

Pac-12 Player of the Year -- Micaela Castain, Washington State
The Castro Valley, Calif. native is the first Cougar since the award’s inception in 1995 to be named Conference Player of the Year. The senior closed out the 2013 season as the Pac-12 leader in points (33) and assists (11) while co-leading the Conference in goals (11). She anchored an offense that ranked in the top three in the Pac-12 in every major offensive statistical category, including the top two points (132) and assists (37). The first team All-Pac-12 performer was named Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 17 after tallying four goals over a weekend where the Cougars went 1-0-1. Castain was a second team All-Pac-12 performer as a junior in 2012 and has 33 goals and 80 points in her career at Washington State.

Pac-12 Freshman of the Year -- Darian Jenkins, UCLA
Jenkins was a force this season from the get-go, helping the Bruins go unbeaten in Conference play to capture their first Pac-12 Championship since 2008. She co-led the Pac-12 in goals (11) and goals per game (.55) and was second in total points (26) and points per game (1.30), while leading all Pac-12 freshmen in those categories. Jenkins was also named first team All-Pac-12 and earned All-Freshman honors, as well. She is the fourth UCLA freshman to earn the honor since the Conference began recognizing the award in 1998.

Pac-12 Coach of the Year -- Keidane McAlpine, Washington State
Washington State head coach Keidane McAlpine was named Pac-12 Women's Soccer Coach of the Year after leading the Cougars to its third-straight NCAA postseason appearance for the first time in program history and a second-place finish in the Conference standings that was its highest Conference placement in the Pac-10/12 era. In his second year at the helm, McAlpine guided WSU to a 14-3-3 overall record and a 7-3-1 Conference record. This season is his seventh year overall as a women's soccer head coach and he currently boasts a 66-57-16 career record.
