Volleyball’s Bailey Sets Career High In Utah Loss

Nov 17, 2013

TEMPE, Ariz.—Freshman BreElle Bailey set a career high with 24 kills as the Arizona State volleyball team dropped a four-set decision (25-22, 24-26, 21-25, 19-25) to Colorado on Sunday afternoon at Wells Fargo Arena.

Bailey’s previous career high was 18, set on Nov. 1 as ASU topped Oregon in four sets.

The Sun Devils (17-11, 6-10 Pac-12) picked up the first set over the Utes (18-10, 7-9 Pac-12) courtesy of a stellar service performance by freshman Whitney Follette. Follette picked up three service aces, one off tying her career high, as ASU used a 9-2 run to take a 14-9 lead over Utah, and ultimately came out with the set, 25-22. Sophomore Macey Gardner was error free in the first frame, recording six kills in 14 attempts, while Bailey added six kills of her own.

ASU continued their lead into the third set, but Utah came back and used three consecutive points off blocks to come get the win, 26-24. Bailey and Gardner combined for nine kills in the set.

The Sun Devils kept things close in the third set, with Bailey knocking down seven kills in 11 attempts, but Utah came out on top, 25-21, before taking the fourth and final set, 25-19.

Bailey led the team with a .383 hitting percentage on the day while senior Stephanie Preach picked up 21 digs. Gardner added 16 kills to the match while sophomore Bianca Arellano added 41 helpers.

Up next, the Sun Devils travel to Los Angeles to take on UCLA and USC for two of their final three road matches of the season. The match against the Bruins is set for Friday, Nov. 22 at 7 p.m. MT, and will be live streamed through uclabruins.com. Sunday, Nov. 24, ASU will take on USC at Noon MT on the Pac-12 Networks.
