Cardinal 2-1 at Stanford Duals

STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 22 Cardinal wrestling team went 2-1 at the Stanford Duals defeating CSU Bakersfield (19-14) and Utah Valley (20-16) and falling to No. 9 Nebraska (28-12), Saturday at Burnham Pavilion in Stanford, Calif. The Cardinal is now 8-2 overall and 1-0 in the Pac-12.

Redshirt senior Ryan Mango, ranked No. 3 nationally at 133 pounds, went 3-0 on the day. He opened with a 17-4 major decision over CSU Bakersfield’s Jose Mendoza. Against Nebraska, he pinned Colton McCrystal in 1:32 for one of just three Stanford wins against the Huskers. The St. Louis, Mo., native wrapped-up the afternoon with a 17-6 major decision over Utah Valley’s Chasen Tolbert.

Redshirt freshman Jim Wilson was also 3-0 on Saturday. Ranked 15th nationally at 165 pounds, Wilson recorded a 6-2 decision over CSU Bakersfield’s David Meza in the Cardinal’s first dual. Against Nebraska’s Austin Wilson, ranked No. 20, he held a 2-0 lead going into the third period and came away with a 4-1 decision. Wilson finished off with a 3-2 decision over Utah Valley’s Curtis Abner Cook.

True freshman Tommy Pawelski finished 2-0 on the afternoon at 125 pounds. He secured a 7-2 decision over CSU Bakersfield’s Matt Correa in the first dual and posted a 7-5 sudden victory decision against Utah Valley’s Bracken Nipko.

In the team’s first dual against CSU Bakersfield, the Roadrunners held a 14-13 advantage with just two bouts left. Stanford sophomore Thomas Kimbrell gave the Cardinal the 16-14 lead with a 4-3 decision over Sean Pollock at 184 pounds. Senior Dan Scherer fought off Reuben Franklin, 9-3, at 197 pounds to seal the win for Stanford.

Redshirt freshman Josh Marchok joined Mango and Wilson as the only Cardinal wrestlers to earn wins against ninth-ranked Nebraska. Marchok opened the dual with a 10-6 decision over Collin Jensen at 285 pounds.

Against Utah Valley, senior Bret Baumbach, who went 1-1 on Saturday, registered an 11-2 major decision over Logan Addis at 157 pounds to give the Cardinal the lead for good. Senior Kyle Meyer added a 3-0 decision at 174 pounds over Monte Schmalhaus to cap off the scoring for Stanford.

The Cardinal will now have almost three weeks off for finals before hitting the mat again on Friday, Dec. 20 against Tennessee-Chattanooga. The Cardinal will take on the Mocs at 6:30 p.m. in Burnham Pavilion.
