Stanford Goes High Class

Dec 4, 2013

STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford men’s and women’s recruiting classes were ranked among the top five in the nation by Track and Field News, as revealed in the publication’s December issue.

The Stanford women were ranked No. 4 and the Cardinal men No. 5 in the annual rankings of the current newcomer (freshman and transfer) classes. Stanford is one of only three schools to be ranked in the top 10 in both the men’s and women’s categories. Newcomers were rated on the potential for having an immediate impact on their collegiate programs.

The Cardinal women received strong grades for the presence of high school All-Americas Megan Glasmann, Valarie Allman, and Carla Forbes.

Glasmann was the top high school javelin thrower in the country, with her best mark of 176-11 placing her No. 2 on the all-time prep list. Glasmann won the U.S. junior national championship and set a meet record at the Pan Am Junior Championships in Colombia in August.

Allman had the nation’s second-best prep mark in the discus and is No. 6 all-time with a best of 184-2. Those marks would have placed Glasmann and Allman third in their events at the NCAA Championships last spring.

Forbes was a triple jump All-America in 2011 and 2012, and owns a wind-legal best of 42-5¼. She also is a 20-1¼ long jumper.

Headlining the Stanford men’s class are high school All-Americas Dylan Duvio and Sean McGorty, as well as Estonia triple jumper Jaak Uudmae (49-11¼), whose father, also Jaak, was the 1980 Olympic champion in that event from the Soviet Union.

Duvio was the No. 2 pole vaulter in the country last season, with a best of 17-3½. Duvio was second at junior nationals and at the Pan Am Junior Championships, the latter despite competing on a sprained ankle.

McGorty already has proven impactful, running No. 1 for Stanford at the Pre-Nationals in cross country and ran No. 4 for the Cardinal on its NCAA West Region championship team, earning all-region honors for his efforts. McGorty brings in strong 1,600- and 3,200-meter high school times of 4:04.47 and 8:45.61, respectively.

The Cardinal opens its indoor track season on Jan. 18 at the UW Indoor Preview in Seattle.
