ASU Keeps The Cup, Beats Rival Arizona On Senior Night

Arizona State 58, Arizona 21

Nov. 30, 2013, at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Ariz.

The Duel in the Desert is more than just a football game.

This year, No. 12 Arizona State’s 58-21 victory over Arizona means they not only finished their regular season undefeated at home, they’ll also host No. 8 Stanford in Tempe for next week’s Pac-12 Championship game on Dec. 7 at 5:45 p.m. MT.

Sun Devil running back D.J. Foster collected a career-high 124 rushing yards and scored a pair of two touchdowns en route to earning Bob Moran Game MVP honors as ASU scored more than 50 points for the sixth time this season.

ASU finished the season with the best conference record in the Pac-12 at 8-1 and notched its first 10-win season since 2007, and the 12th 10-win season in school history.

ASU struck first as they quickly drove downfield and freshman kicker Zane Gonzalez made his 16th straight field goal of the season. And after a 3-and-out shutdown of Arizona’s offense (including a sack and a tackle-for-loss by defensive tackle Carl Bradford on Arizona quarterback BJ Denker and a delay-of-game penalty against the Wildcats), Gonzalez booted three more points on the board, tying the school record for consecutive field goals made with 17.

From there, the rout was on as quarterback Taylor Kelly spread the ball around to score the second-most points in Territorial Cup history. Tight end De’Marieya Nelson ran for two scores, and Kelly complimented the ground game with 274 passing yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Kelly became ASU’s record-holder for total points responsible for with 210 on 27 passing touchdowns and eight rushing touchdowns to break Mike Pagel’s record of 198 set all the way back in 1981.

ASU defense was just as good, stuffing Arizona’s run game early and forcing four turnovers, including a 64-yard interception return by safety Damarious Randle in the third quarter.

ASU has now won back-to-back Territorial Cup games for the first time since it won three-straight from 2005-07.
