Dec 26, 2013

The Sun Devil men's basketball team (10-2) hosts UC Irvine Saturday (Dec. 28) at noon on the Pac-12 Network to conclude its 2013-14 non-conference schedule. ASU opens Pac-12 play on Thursday, Jan. 2, vs. Washington on ESPNU at 6 p.m. MT.

BLOCK-CHYNSKI: Jordan Bachynski's 57 blocks leads the nation as of Dec. 26 and is more than 273 teams.

LAST TIME OUT: Jermaine Marshall scored a season-high 27 points, including seven three-pointers, to lead ASU past Texas Tech, 76-62 on Dec. 21...Marshall’s seven three-pointers was the most by a Sun Devil since both Ty Abbott and Rihards Kuksiks hit seven in the 2010-11 season...Jahii Carson finished with a double-double, recording 16 points and a career-high 13 assists, which the most by an ASU player since Ahlon Lewis had 14 in 1998...Carson found Marshall for six of his seven threes...Jordan Bachynski finished with 12 points, and led ASU with eight boards and seven blocks...Bachynski now has 238 blocks in his career, just 40 short of the Pac-12 record of 278 held by Anthony Cook of Arizona (1985-89).

ASSISTS: Jahii Carson's 13 assists vs. Texas Tech is the most by a Sun Devil since Ahlon Lewis had 14 vs. USC on Jan. 14 1998. Jahii is just the fifth Sun Devil to notch 13 assists in a game, joining Lewis, Marcell Capers, Lynn Collins and Fat Lever.

5 DAYS BEFORE GAME: The Sun Devils are 21-10 (.677) in the past seven years when Herb Sendek's staff has at least five full days in between games, and seven of the wins have been against teams that would make the NCAA Tournament in that season. Most notable recently was an 87-80 win over NCAA-bubble worthy Arizona in the 2011-12 regular season finale on March 4. Wins in 2009-10 included MWC Tournament champion San Diego State (five-game win streak at the time), a home win over Pac-10 Tournament champ and No. 24 Washington and a win at Arizona. In 2008-09 the five-day layoff wins included ASU's first NCAA Tournament win since 2003 (over Temple), a win over Arizona (entered the game on seven-game win streak) and a neutral site win over a 10-0 BYU team that had a guy named Jimmer. In 2007-08, the wins included ASU's first win in Tucson in 13 seasons, an overtime win at California in which ASU was playing as a ranked team for the first time in 13 seasons and a 22-point win over #17 Xavier in December of 2007 that is ASU's largest victory margin over a ranked opponent.
