Cougars Win Baker’s Dozen at WSU Open II Meet
PULLMAN, Wash. -- Washington State University track and field competitors won 13 events and tallied 13 lifetime-best marks at the WSU Open II Indoor Meet at the WSU Indoor Facility on the Pullman campus.
WSU women won seven events Saturday. On the track, Abby Regan, a junior from Coonamble, NSW, Australia, won the mile with a PR time of 4 minutes, 55.21 seconds which is the 10th-best time in WSU historical records. Danielle Darden (freshman, Aliso Viejo, Calif.) won the 200m dash in a time of 25.17 seconds with Bree Winfrey the runner-up in a time of 25.24. Erin Allen (junior, Kenmore, Wash.) won the 400m dash with a PR time of 56.68 with Dominique Keel second in a time of 57.36. Keel and Darden were out-sprinted in the 60m dash final by Cougar alum Princess Joy Griffey who won in a season-best time of 7.54. Andrea Smith (junior, Kennewick, Wash.) won the 60m hurdles with a PR time of 8.92.
Charlotte Muschamp won the women’s high jump, equaling her PR mark of 5-feet 10 inches (1.78m) for the third time this season. Katie Dean (sophomore, Vancouver, Wash.) won the long jump with a PR distance of 17-9 (5.41m) while teammate Zoe Moller also leaped 17-9 but took second place based on the second-best marks in the competition. Shantae Young (senior, Oak Harbor, Wash.) won the triple jump with a distance of 37-10 1/2 (11.54m).
The WSU men claimed victories in six events led by Naches, Wash., sophomore Thane Pierson’s PR clearance in the high jump of 6-10 1/14 (2.09m). Tay’lor Eubanks (sophomore, Everett, Wash.) was a late entry in the triple jump and took the win with a mark of 47-5 (14.45m).
Andre McBride (sophomore, San Leandro, Calif.) won the 60m dash in a time of 7.11 followed by Kyle Farmer’s runner-up time of 7.12. Rashaun Johnson (senior, West Seattle) won the 200m dash with a time of 22.61. Garrett Gerling (redshirt junior, Walla Walla) claimed the 60m hurdles in a time of 8.23 after running a prelim time of 8.18. Freshman John Whelan (Etna, Calif.) won the men’s mile in a time of 4:21.01.
“It has been a good indoor season for us and we had some good performances today,” WSU Head Coach Rick Sloan said. “In the high jump, Charlotte Muschamp did really well and it was good to Holly Parent back in uniform and jumping again. She has a little way to go but it was good to see her back in competition. All three men high jumpers, Thane Pierson, Cole Smith and Grant Schultz, jumped well today. With Thane, we could see this coming in practice and see him start to understand how to run the curves and it showed up today. I think he’ll be a seven-footer before he’s done. I’m looking forward to next week.”
The Cougars compete next Friday and Saturday, Feb. 28 and March 1, at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Dempsey Indoor Facility in Seattle.
