Pac-12 announces tennis players of the week

Mar 11, 2014

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UCLA freshman Mackenzie McDonald and ARIZONA senior Kim Stubbe were voted Pac-12 men’s and women’s tennis Players of the Week for play from Mar. 4-10, the Conference office announced today.

McDonald (Piedmont, Calif.) was the only Bruin player to go perfect in both singles and doubles last week, helping UCLA to a pair of wins over No. 2 Virginia and Saint Mary’s at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. Against the Cavaliers on Thursday, which was a rematch of last year’s NCAA Championship, the freshman posted a 7-5, 6-4 win over Ryan Shane after teaming up with fellow freshman Gage Brymer to help the Bruins win the doubles point. McDonald, who is ranked 35th nationally in singles, came back on Sunday to notch two more wins, downing Thomas Hunt of Saint Mary’s 6-1, 6-4 in singles, and again teaming with Brymer in doubles to blank opponents Samuel Bloore and Thomas Hunt, 8-0. With the wins, UCLA improved to 11-1.

Stubbe (Mol, Belgium) also won all of her matches this past weekend, all in straight sets, winning in four matches in two days. Stubbe anchored the upset over No. 28 Washington in Seattle, defeating Grace Ysidora, 6-2, 6-2, and helping clinch the doubles point with an 8-4 doubles victory alongside teammate Lauren Marker. Earlier in the week, Stubbe lifted the Huskies to a shutout win over Seattle. The senior defeated Anna Lambert in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0, and blanked the doubles team in the No. 2 slot.

UCLA men’s tennis hosts Baylor on Wednesday, Mar. 12 at 2 p.m. PT, while Arizona women’s tennis hosts a trio of dual matches, taking on Purdue on Wednesday, Mar. 19 then opening Pac-12 play against Washington State on Friday and Oregon on Saturday.
