Women’s Crew Heads Down To San Diego Crew Classic

SEATTLE – As has become the norm, the No. 6 University of Washington Women’s rowing team will head down to California this weekend to race in the San Diego Crew Classic. Racing begins at 7:00 a.m. PT on Sat. April 5 and Sun. April 6.

The Huskies will race three boats in San Diego including the varsity 8+, JV 8+ and the novice 8+. The varsity 4+, the JV 4+ as well as the next three 8+s will stay home in Seattle to take on Western Washington and Seattle University at the Husky Open.

Over the past two years, UW has advanced all of its boats entered in the Classic to the grand final races on Sunday, and the hope is to keep the streak alive.

“The best competition on the west coast will be at the Classic,” head coach Bob Ernst said. “This race is one of the few chances we get to see all of our conference opponents and because of that it is extremely important for seeding when it comes time for Pac-12s.”

Over the weekend the Huskies will have to take on rival No. 1 California as well as three other ranked teams from the Pac-12: No. 4 USC, No. 12 UCLA and No. 14 Washington State.

At last year’s Classic, three of the four Husky crews finished on the podium, with the novice 8+ taking gold and the JV 8+ and the varsity 4+ both taking bronze. The varsity 8+ finished fifth in the final amidst an extremely tough field, which featured five top-10 ranked teams, including the Huskies.

“We have an amazing group of talented athletes this year and we are excited to see what they can do. This race will kick it all off,” finished Ernst.
