Beavers’ Showcase Caps Spring Ball

May 3, 2014

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State football team put the finishing touches on Spring Ball with the annual Spring Showcase Saturday afternoon at Reser Stadium. The spring final practice concluded a day of activities including an autograph session, the 50-yardline sale in Truax Indoor Center and 71-plays of scrimmage mixed with other drills and fan participation.

Returning starting quarterback Sean Mannion led four drives early in the practice session before heading to the sidelines while his understudies Luke Del Rio, Brent VanderVeen and Kyle Kempt took over as they pursue the second-string job.

Del Rio led the Beavers’ lone scoring drive, a 12-play, 70-yard grind culminating in a 2-yard touchdown dive by redshirt freshman Damien Haskins. Del Rio finished the day  completing 9 of 17 passes for 80 yards, while VanderVeen completed 2 of 7 for 32 yards and an interception. Kemp was 3 of 6 for 6 yards.

A plethora of lesser-known offensive players received an abundance of playing time with several players slated for key roles in the fall were sidelined by injury including offensive linemen Isaac Seumalo (foot) and Josh Mitchell (shoulder), tight end Caleb Smith (hamstring) and split end Richard Mullaney (ankle). In addition, proven regulars like Sean Mannion, Storm  Woods and Terron Ward played limited roles while younger players continued their competition for increased playing time in the fall.

The defense, which is expected to be a strength of the team in 2014, held its own allowing only 248 yards. Senior Obum Gwacham, who moved to defensive end from wide receiver this spring, recorded the defense’s first of two sacks. Sophomore linebacker Rommel Mageo was also credited with a sack. Junior transfer Devin Chappell made a fantastic play on a VanderVeen throw diving to make the day’s only interception.

On special teams, incumbent kicker Trevor Romaine hit 1 of 2 field goals from 34-yards and redshirt freshman Garrett Owens nailed both of his attempts.
