Katelyn Rowland Selected to U.S. Team for U-20 Women’s World Cup

Jul 17, 2014

Senior goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland will lead the U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team at the 2014 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup in August. The tournament will take place in Edmonton, Montreal, Moncton and Toronto, Canada, from Aug. 5-24.

Rowland earned the Golden Glove at the CONCACAF U-20 Championship in January, recording shutouts in each of her four starts and five saves in the tournament. During her junior season at UCLA, she earned All-America honors and was the national leader in goals against average (0.27) and save percentage (.903). She also set a school record for single-season shutouts with 15. In the College Cup, she made saves on two penalty shots in the semifinal shootout win against Virginia and then shut out Florida State in the championship match.

All three of the USA’s group games will be broadcast live across the ESPN platforms. The U.S. plays its first two Group B matches at the Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, opening its tournament on Aug. 5 against Germany at 5 pm local (4 pm PT on ESPNU and WatchESPN) before facing Brazil on Aug. 8 at 8 pm local (7 pm PT on ESPNU and WatchESPN). The USA will finish group play on Aug. 12 against China PR at Moncton Stadium with a kickoff at 5 pm local (1 pm PT on ESPN2 and WatchESPN). The curtain-raising clash between the USA, which has won this tournament three times, and Germany, which has it won it twice, will pit the countries that played in the 2012 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Final in Tokyo. The U.S., which had Bruins Sarah Killion and Sam Mewis on the squad, won that match, 1-0.
