Motum and Shelton Compete in NBA Summer League

PULLMAN, Wash. – Former Washington State University men’s basketball student-athletes Brock Motum and D.J. Shelton competed with the Utah Jazz and Atlanta Hawks, respectively, in the 2014 NBA Summer League at Las Vegas.

Motum, who played for the Cougars from 2010-13, appeared in all five games for the Jazz, which went 3-2, falling in the second round of the tournament. A native of Brisbane, Australia, Motum averaged 8.0 points and 4.6 rebounds per game, while playing 17.2 minutes of action per outing. He scored a personal summer league-best 16 points in the Jazz’s second game, an 87-71 victory over the Bucks, July 14, where he pulled down 6 rebounds and had 2 steals. He had 14 points in a loss to San Antonio July 17, adding 8 rebounds and a clocked shot while going 6-for-8 from the field.

Motum ranks fifth in WSU’s career record books with 1,530 points scored in four seasons. He led the Cougars and the Pac-12 in scoring two-straight seasons with 18.0 points per game in 2011-12 and 18.7 ppg in 2012-13. At the conclusion of the 2012 season, he was named the league’s most improved player while earning first team all-conference honors. He was named All-Pac-12 Second Team in 2013.

Shelton, who recently graduated from Washington State after playing for the Cougars for three seasons, from 2012-14, played five of the Hawks’ six games. He averaged 2.4 points and 1.6 rebounds an outing in 6.6 minutes played per game. A native of Rialto, Calif., Shelton started off strong with 6 points and 5 rebounds in Atlanta’s opening game loss to Washington, July 12. He scored 3 points and grabbed 2 boards in a 78-71 loss to tournament runner-up, Houston, July 19 in the quarterfinals of the tournament.

Shelton became the first Cougar to reach the single-season top-10 for rebounding in his senior year, 2014, as he grabbed 297 boards, putting him in fourth place on the list. He led the league in rebounding in Pac-12 play with 10.4 rebounds per game in league action and was second overall with 9.6 rpg, 23rd in the country. Shelton recorded 13 double-doubles on the season, tied for second in the Pac-12.
