Cats Complete Red-Blue Scrimmage

TUCSON - The Arizona volleyball team completed its annual red-blue scrimmage Saturday, with the two squads splitting the four sets. Blue took the first set 25-21 before red responded with a 25-17 victory in the second set. Blue rebounded with a decisive 25-16 victory in the third set before red won the fourth and final set 25-19.

Players switched teams between sets as Head Coach Dave Rubio used the intrasquad scrimmage to get looks at various lineups.

The match was held inside Richard Jefferson Gymnasium as the McKale Center renovations are being completed.

Madi Kingdon led the way with 21 kills and a .366 hitting percentage. The senior outside hitter added a team-high four service aces to go along with seven digs and an assist. Junior transfer Whitney Hunt led the team with 24 assists while sophomore Penina Snuka added 22 of her own. Snuka also chipped in nine digs, a team-high along with freshman Brooke Dougherty.

Freshman middle blocker Jade Turner notched five kills while hitting .400. The Bakersfield, Calif., native added four blocks as well.

The Wildcats will open the 2014 campaign away from McKale Center as they head to Milwaukee for the Wisconsin Tourament. UA opens against South Dakota on Friday, Aug. 29 before taking on Wisconsin-Green Bay and Kansas State on Aug. 30.

The home opening tournament will be Arizona's very first home event since the McKale Center renovations, so be sure to come out to the first weekend to see the new-look arena.
