Pac-12 announces women's soccer players of the week

Aug 26, 2014

SAN FRANCISCO - In the first weekly vote of the 2014 women’s soccer season, ARIZONA STATE’s Aly Moon was named Offensive Player of the Week, while UCLA’s Megan Oyster was voted Defensive Player of the Week and STANFORD’s Jane Campbell was tabbed Goalkeeper of the Week, the Conference office announced today.

Moon (Brea, Calif.) scored three goals on ten shots and added an assist for the Sun Devils as they picked up a tie and a win in the Outrigger Resorts Shootout in Honolulu, Hawaii. The freshman midfielder began the weekend with three shots against Texas as the Sun Devils battled the Longhorns to a 2-2 tie. In her biggest play of the game, Moon was fouled in the box in the 85th minute with ASU down 2-1, drawing a penalty kick. Teammate McKenzie Berryhill was successful on the ensuing PK, capping ASU’s rally from two goals down. In Sunday’s game versus host Hawaii, Moon tied the single-game school record with three goals in ASU’s 5-2 win. She also had an assist to give her seven points for the game, which tied the second-highest single-game total in school history. Her efforts earned her the Most Valuable Player title of the Outrigger Resorts Shootout as well as recognition on TopDrawerSoccer.com's Team of the Week.

Oyster (Naperville, Ill.) helped lead a stifling UCLA defense to a pair of shutouts, allowing zero shots in a 3-0 victory over Maryland and just one shot in a 3-0 win over UC Irvine. The senior defender also scored the game-winning goal against the Terps, powerfully heading in a corner kick in the 27th minute. The goal was just the second of her career. Oyster, who was named to the College Cup All-Tournament Team last season, has helped the Bruins shut out seven of their last eight opponents, dating back to last year.

Campbell (Kennesaw, Ga.) earned two shutouts on the road against nationally ranked teams for the Cardinal. The sophomore goalkeeper made nine saves in a 1-0 overtime victory at No. 4 North Carolina, including five in the first half. In the 76th minute with UNC on a breakaway, Campbell closed the angle and dived to her right to snag a shot out of the air. She also helped Stanford to a 2-0 win against No. 18 Duke at UNC, where the Card defense held the Blue Devils to seven shots.

This week, Arizona State and No. 5 Stanford remain on the road while top-ranked UCLA hosts two more home games. The Sun Devils play at Illinois and Loyola Chicago on Aug. 29 and 31, and the Cardinal travels to take on No. 14 Portland on Aug. 30. The Bruins host No. 9 North Carolina on Aug. 29 before facing San Diego on Aug. 31, and both of UCLA’s games will be televised live on Pac-12 Networks.
