Q&A: How I Spent my Summer

From interning in an entomology lab and traveling abroad to attending classes and playing in soccer’s developmental leagues, Cal women’s soccer players found plenty to do during their summer. Today, as the Golden Bears begin their 2014-15 academic year, CalBears.com caught up with each of them to ask: “How did you spend your summer?”

Taylor Comeau: I went to Europe (Sweden, Paris and Italy) and then came back and went straight to Seattle to play for the Seattle Sounders.

Sandra Ley: I went to New York for a month and went to our nation’s capital for the first time. I played with the Storm and played a lot of pick-up soccer with a lot of fantastic players, meanwhile taking physics 8B this summer.

Kelsie Dickerson. I interned at an entomology lab on campus and conducted research on pollinator communities in Yolo County (specifically native bees)

Thelma Einarsdottir: I went home to Iceland and played with Selfoss FC with Celeste B. We went on a 10-hour hike through two glaciers in Eyjafjallajökull – one of them erupted in 2010.

Lynsey Hromatko: I trained with the North Bay Wave and spent time at my family’s cabin in Lake Tahoe.

Celeste Boureille: I spent my summer playing on a team in Iceland called Selfoss FC.

Bryce Watts:  I spent my summer working out and preparing for the national championships in Maryland, and taking hikes with my friends.

Lorin Hom: I Played for the SF Nighthawks, took a family vacation to Morocco and had an internship in Marin.

Haley Lukas: I spent my summer on Lake Michigan at my family’s beach house. It’s my favorite vacation because I get to relax and spend time with relatives! But don’t worry – I did all my Cal fitness workouts while I was there!

Staci Burland: I played club soccer and traveled to Seattle for Nationals.

Tori Bolden: I spent my summer attending Summer BRIDGE here at Cal.

Arielle Ship: Rehabilitating my knee and training hard for the fall season. I took a summer class up here at school and while I was home, I was enjoying the beach and warm weather.

Grace Leer: I spent my summer playing for the North Bay FC Wave soccer team in Marin, Calif. I went to Lake Almanor, Lake Tahoe, Lake Pillsburg and Stinson Beach.

Isabel Damiani: I played club soccer and traveled to ECNL Nationals, and went to Ojai with a few high school friends for vacation.

Karly Graf: I played for the Santa Clarita Blue Heat, worked for my family’s business and played footvolley on the beach in Santa Barbara.

Melissa Lewis: Playing soccer, going to Tahoe spending time with friends and family

Kelly Fitzgerald: I played for my old club team SoCal Blues. I also hiked Yosemite and spent a lot of time at the beach.

Samantha Witteman: I spent my summer doing some traveling, spending time with family and playing pick-up soccer. I traveled to Thailand and Hong Kong, where I explored the city life. I went on hikes and relaxed on the beach. It was a great summer.

Alexa Vandevanter: I spent my summer playing for the North Bay Wave and coaching Cal soccer camps.

Celeste Martore: I had an internship/study abroad in India.

Heather Walleigh: Spending time with family and going to the beach.

Elliott Gentile: Interning for Strategic Communications in Cal Athletics and watching the World Cup.

Emily Boyd: I did a lot of fitness packet workouts, went to Hawaii with my family and turned 18! I said a lot of hellos and even more goodbyes. I drove to California from Seattle and now I’m here for good.

Annia Mejia: This summer I worked out and played soccer. I played at the National Championship in Maryland and went to the beach with friends.

Kory Lamet: I played for the WPSL Sacramento Storm, interned at Comcast Sportsnet Bay Area and spent time with my family.

Hannah Koski: I played for the Bay Area Breeze, a team in the W-League. I also ran the Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon in San Diego with my Dad to raise money for the Oso Slide victims in Washington.

Guro Bergsvand: I went hiking In Italy with my family, played beach volleyball, and played soccer in Norway with Stabaek.

Zoe Clark: I went home to New York for a month, and then I came back for Session D of summer classes to take chemistry. I was training on my own as well as with a summer team until the end of July.

Melissa Wood: I went camping in Shasta and at Lake Siskiyou for a few days, and then spent the rest of my summer rehabbing.

Indigo Gibson: I spent my summer relaxing at the beach. Mainly the beaches near my house, but I also spent one week in the Caribbean with friends and family.

Ifeoma Onumonu: I went to Seattle and played with the Seattle Sounders women’s team. I spent some time with family and just relaxed.

Maddie Julian: Training in Southern California at Sports Science Lab, working as a counselor at Cal soccer camps and spending time with friends and family.
