Card, Broncos Renew Rivalry
STANFORD, Calif. -- Stanford completes its nonconference schedule this weekend by renewing its South Bay rivalry with Santa Clara on Friday and following with a televised match against Cal Poly on Sunday. No. 4 Stanford (6-0-1) has not allowed a goal this season and is the only team in the country that can claim that. Stanford trails in the all-time series, but is closing the gap, having beaten the Broncos (4-3) nine consecutive times. Cal Poly (3-4), the defending Big West Conference regular-season champ, seeks its first victory in eight all-time meetings with the Cardinal.
The following is a closer look at this weekend’s matches:

Season in Review: Stanford is the only team in the country that has not allowed a goal, and goalkeeper Jane Campbell leads the nation with a 0.00 goals-against average. Stanford is 4-0-1 against ranked teams, including 1-0 overtime victories over current No. 7 Florida and current No. 9 North Carolina. Chioma Ubogagu has scored two winners, including the one that beat UNC, then No. 4, in Chapel Hill to end Stanford’s 11-match winless streak against the Tar Heels. She also scored a first-half goal to win at Portland. Stanford returns nine starters from a team that went 15-6-1 and reached the Sweet 16 of last year’s tournament.
Friday’s Opponent, Santa Clara: The Broncos (4-3) fell from No. 24 out of the NSCAA Top 25 after a hard-fought 1-0 loss at Cal on Sunday. Santa Clara’s losses are to current No. 10 Cal (twice) and No. 18 Notre Dame. The Broncos are seeking their first victory over a ranked opponent this year. In 2013, Santa Clara won a share of the West Coast Conference title, and reached the NCAA Sweet 16 before finishing 16-4-2. Coach Jerry Smith, who led the Broncos to the 2001 NCAA title, is in his 28th season at SCU and carries a 414-130-52 record.
The Stanford-Santa Clara Series: Santa Clara leads the all-time series, 18-16-5, but Stanford has closed a considerable gap by winning their past nine meetings, by a combined score of 29-7. Last year’s victory was one of the most dramatic in series. Stanford trailed 2-1 until Courtney Verloo scored on a penalty kick with 54 seconds left in regulation and then won it on a 22-yard free kick in the 108th minute. The winner gave fifth-year senior Verloo her first collegiate hat trick -- with all on spot kicks -- to give Stanford a 3-2 victory at Buck Shaw Stadium. The teams have met nine times in NCAA tournament play and Santa Clara is Stanford’s most frequent opponent.
Sunday’s Opponent, Cal Poly: The Mustangs (3-4), who play visiting Fresno State on Friday, are the defending Big West regular-season champions, but were eliminated on penalty kicks in the conference semifinals and denied an NCAA tournament berth, finishing 11-7-1. Cal Poly is led by junior Elise Krieghoff, who scored a school-record 21 goals last season and ranked No. 1 in the nation in goals per match average (1.105). Krieghoff was named Big West Offensive Player of the Year. This season, she leads the team with three goals.
The Stanford-Cal Poly Series: Stanford leads the all-time series 7-0. They have played three times in the NCAA tournament and the Cardinal holds a 4-0 series lead over the Mustangs in matches at Stanford. This is their first meeting on The Farm since 2005. Overall, Stanford has outscored Cal Poly, 21-2. In their most recent meeting, in 2009 in San Luis Obispo, Stanford won 2-1 while taking a school-record 40 shots, forcing 15 saves from Mustangs’ goalkeeper Coral Hoover.
Shutout Streak: Stanford is the only team in the country that has not allowed a goal. For the fifth time in program history, Stanford assembled a streak of seven shutouts. Eight would be a school record. The Cardinal extended its shutout streak to 672 minutes, 12 seconds, dating back to last season. Jane Campbell has been in the nets for 571:47 this season and Sarah Cox for 90:00. Stanford already has broken the school record for consecutive shutouts to open the season, which was five (in 1989). Ahead is the Stanford record for consecutive shutout minutes, 774:22, bridging the 2002 and 2003 seasons. The Stanford record for most shutouts in a season is 19 (2002) and the fewest goals allowed is four (2002).
Campbell’s Save: Besides being credited with five shutouts going into the weekend, Stanford goalkeeper Jane Campbell has not allowed a goal in all 571 minutes, 47 seconds she has played this season. Campbell leads the nation with a 0.00 goals-against average, and moved into 10th on Stanford’s all-time list for career shutouts, with 11, tying Jennifer Poehler (1991-94). However, Campbell’s biggest highlight was her second-half save against No. 6 Florida, in a match Stanford went on to win, 1-0, in overtime. Florida All-America Savannah Jordan took advantage of a rare Stanford defensive mistake to pounce on a loose ball and fire a long-distance shot bending toward the upper corner of the Cardinal goal. Campbell, backtracking from the top of the box, flung her body backward and tipped the ball over the bar with a full-extension dive.
Pac-12 Players of the Week: Jane Campbell and Kendall Romine are reigning Pac-12 Goalkeeper and Defensive players of the week. Both were recognized for Stanford’s remarkable defense that has not conceded a goal. Campbell made a spectacular save to aid Stanford’s cause in a 1-0 victory over No. 6 Florida on Friday. Romine, a fifth-year senior, has been key to Stanford’s shutout streak with her play as a central defender. She also scored on a penalty kick and had an assist in Stanford’s 8-0 victory over Dayton on Sunday. It was Campbell second Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week honor this year. Romine also was recognized on the weekly Honor Roll by CollegeSoccer360.com.
Milestone Victory: Stanford coach Paul Ratcliffe won two matches last week to reach 200 victories at Stanford. In his 12th season on The Farm, the three-time NSCAA National Coach of the Year, is 200-43-22 (.796) with four Pac-12 titles, five College Cup berths, and one national championship (2011).

Scoring Explosion: Stanford’s 8-0 rout of visiting Dayton on Sunday was not a school record for scoring. In fact, it fell far short. The eight-goal total is in an eight-way tie for sixth on Stanford’s all-time list. However, since 2000, it ranks in a tie for second as other programs grew stronger and small-college programs came off the schedule. Here is a list of Stanford’s highest scoring performances:

Hat Trick: Ryan Walker-Hartshorn became the 19th Stanford player to record a hat trick, scoring three goals in an 18-minute span in an 8-0 victory over Dayton on Sunday. Walker-Hartshorn became the first to earn a hat trick while coming off the bench since Kristin Stannard did so on Sept. 6, 2009, in a 5-0 victory over Virginia Tech. Walker-Hartshorn’s hat trick was the 30th overall in Stanford history, but only the second over the past four seasons. Tough Schedule: Some facts about Stanford’s 2014 schedule:
• Stanford has played five ranked opponents and is 4-0-1 in those matches.
• Stanford has beaten (according to ranking at the time) No. 4 North Carolina, No. 6 Florida, No. 14 Portland, No. 18 Duke and tied No. 25 Notre Dame.
• This season, Stanford plays every past NCAA Division I women’s socer champion except George Mason. That’s seven in all.
• Stanford’s opponents have combined for 30 of 31 non-Stanford NCAA titles.
• Of teams in the NSCAA preseason rankings, Stanford plays seven of the Top 25, five of the top 11, and two of the top four, including No. 1.
• Eleven opponents are coming off NCAA tournament appearances, and eight of those advanced past the first round.

U-20 World Cup: Three Stanford players -- sophomore goalkeeper Jane Campbell, sophomore defender Stephanie Amack, and freshman midfielder Andi Sullivan -- were on the U.S. team at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Canada. The U.S. reached the quarterfinals before losing to North Korea on penalty kicks. Amack and Sullivan started all four matches for the U.S., Amack at right outside back and Sullivan as a holding midfielder. They missed 12 days of training camp before joining the team the week of its opener and beem regular starters ever since. Senior forward Chioma Ubogagu and Amack were on the winning U.S. team in 2012.

Two-sport star: Stanford senior Hannah Farr, who plays outside back and midfield this season, also plays lacrosse for Stanford and was named IWLCA second-team All-America in that sport in 2014. Farr was named Player of the Year in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and to the IWLCA All-West Region first team. Farr scored 31 goals and had 13 assists in 2014 for a Cardinal lacrosse team that advanced to the NCAA tournament. Farr is searching for her first collegiate soccer goal.

Scoring Summary: Stanford has scored 15 goals, but until Sunday’s 8-0 victory over Dayton, Stanford hadn’t scored more than two goals in a match. The Cardinal had gone 290 minutes, 19 seconds without scoring a goal in the run of play until Andi Sullivan opened the scoring against Dayton in the 17th minute. Stanford is tied for 57th in the nation in goals per match with 2.14, placing the Cardinal sixth in the Pac-12.

Clutch Player: Chioma Ubogagu has two game-winning goals this season. She scored the overtime winner in the opener at No. 4 North Carolina on Aug. 22. Alex Doll pushed the ball wide to Ubogagu just outside the box. Ubogagu spun right, beat three defenders toward the end line and squeezed in a shot to the near post at 99:00.
At No. 14 Portland on Aug. 30, Ubogagu read a crossfield pass and pressured the center back into missing the ball. Ubogagu took possession and bolted for the goal, scoring on a low shot with her left foot from 18 yards in the 30th minute.

Senior CLASS Award Candidates: Alex Doll and Taylor Uhl are among 30 players named as candidates for the Senior CLASS Award, which honors those who excel in athletics, academics, and community service. Doll is co-president of the Cardinal Council, which represents the 800 student-athletes on campus. Doll serves as a mentor for Partners for Academic Excellence, helping student-athletes use their time wisely and take advantage of campus resources. She also was Community Service Chair of the Cardinal Council, and was the nomination committee class representative for her sorority, Kappa Kappa Gamma.
