Pac-12 announces women's soccer players of the week

Oct 20, 2014

SAN FRANCISCO - The Pac-12 Conference announced today the Women’s Soccer Players of the Week for the week of Oct. 13-19. UCLA’s Sam Mewis was voted Offensive Player of the Week, while WASHINGTON STATE’s Mariah Powers was tabbed the Defensive Player of the Week and ARIZONA STATE’s Chandler Morris was named Goalkeeper of the Week.

Sam Mewis (Hanson, Mass.) had a hand in five of UCLA’s nine goals over the weekend in wins over No. 22 California and No. 23 Arizona. In the 3-0 victory over Cal, Mewis tallied two assists, including a dish on the game winner by Darian Jenkins in the 47th minute. The senior also assisted on the game winner against Arizona, while also netting a goal in the 89th minute for her team-leading 10th tally of the season and a final score of 6-0. Mewis was dangerous offensively in both games, with two shots on goal versus Cal and three versus Arizona. The midfielder has recorded a goal or an assist in five-consecutive games and in 12 of UCLA’s 15 games this year. She leads the team with 10 goals, six game-winning goals and a Pac-12-leading 27 points.

Mariah Powers (Elk Grove, Calif.) scored the game-winning goal in the 107th minute and the first of her career as a Cougar as Washington State defeated Oregon, 1-0. The junior defender was part of a back line that limited UO to just two shots on goal in the double-overtime match. The victory moved the Cougars into third place in the competitive Pac-12, with an overall record of 8-2-3 and a Conference mark of 3-2-1.

Chandler Morris (Corona, Calif.) faced 25 shots and came up with 10 saves, just one short of a career high, in the Sun Devils’ 2-0 win at USC on Friday. It was the first ASU victory at USC since 1997. Morris became only the third goalkeeper this season to shutout USC as the Trojans came into the week leading the Pac-12 in goals per game, including five games with three or more goals. The senior now has six shutouts on the year and 18 in her career which is second all-time in the Arizona State record books.

Mewis’ honor is the first of her career and the 48th all-time for the Bruins. The recognition for Powers is also the first of her career and marks the 14th weekly honor overall for the Cougars. Morris takes home her first-career weekly honor and the 23rd for Arizona State all-time.

UCLA heads to the Pacific Northwest to take on Oregon State on Friday, Oct. 24 and Oregon on Sunday, Oct. 26, with the latter match slated to be broadcast on Pac-12 Networks. The Cougars travel to play at Colorado and Utah on the same dates, respectively, with Friday’s match being televised live on the Conference networks. Arizona State plays host to California and Stanford on Friday and Sunday. For more information, including a complete schedule, visit www.pac-12.com
