Cal Women’s Tennis Signs Olivia Hauger

BERKELEY – Olivia Hauger, the 2014 Junior Australian Open quarterfinalist, signed a National Letter of Intent to join the California women’s tennis program, head coach Amanda Augustus announced on Friday.

Hauger, one of America’s rising stars, holds a top 100 junior world ranking and will graduate from Booker T. Washington High School to join the Golden Bears for the 2015-16 season.

“I am thrilled that Olivia will be joining our 2015-2016 team,” Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. “Olivia is an outstanding student as she will graduate high school a year early to come to Cal. She is an elite-level player who will be a great fit on the Berkeley campus as she has successfully balanced traditional high school with tournaments and training.”

The Tulsa, Oklahoma, native currently ranks as one of the top 10 junior Americans, according to her ITF ranking. In addition to her Australian Open success she competed in the 2014 French Open and 2014 U.S. Open Junior Grand Slam events.

Hauger – who began playing tennis at age 7 – has earned many high profile wins in her career, including a 6-4, 6-3 second round Australian Open win over Varvara Flink. Flink, the No. 2 ranked junior in the world at the time, was also the tournament’s top seed.

Hauger boasts a successful international resume, highlighted by singles and doubles titles at the Monterrey ITF Junior Cup in Monterrey, Mexico and the Estonian Junior Open singles crown in 2013.

“Olivia has extensive international playing experience and will transition smoothly to our hard-working and competitive team,” Augustus said. “Olivia will be our first player from Oklahoma, and she adds new and exciting diversity to our program.”

Hauger will join a talented Bear squad that just finished competing in the USTA/ITA Women's Indoor Intercollegiate Championships at Flushing Meadows in New York. Cal was represented by five members of the 2014-2015 team that formed it largest contingent ever at the prestigious ITA Grand Slam event. 

“We believe Olivia will help us compete for NCAA Championships and at the same time continue our proud tradition of a 100-percent graduation rate,” Augustus said. “I have really enjoyed getting to know Olivia and her family throughout this recruiting process and can't wait to start working with her when she joins our Cal women's tennis family in August 2015.”

The current Bears return to action when they play in Maui, Hawaii, from Jan. 8-10 in the Hawaii Invitational.
