Woodmansee’s Bat, Martinez’s Arm Lead Maroon To Victory, Even Series
PHOENIX — Sophomore shortstop Colby Woodmansee blasted a two-run homer in the top of the first inning and sophomore right-hander Seth Martinez dealt four scoreless frames to lead Maroon to a 3-2 victory over Gold in game two of the Maroon and Gold World Series on Tuesday evening at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
Woodmansee and Martinez earned co-Most Valuable Players honors as they helped Maroon even the series at one game apiece.
“They’ve experienced my power firsthand all fall and I warned him not to leave one hanging for me,” Woodmansee said. “Well, he left one hanging. And I made him pay.”
Martinez scattered just two hits and struck out four in lights-out performance to pick up his first save of the season and seal the one-run win for Maroon.
“The Gold team may have been standing in the batter’s box like they wanted to face me, but they didn’t want anything to do with me,” Martinez said. “Our catcher Zach Cerbo called a great game and our manager Ben Greenspan pushed all the right buttons to get us the big win.”
Maroon senior right-hander Darin Gillies (1-0) started and earned the win as he finished the game with one strikeout, despite allowing two runs before leaving the game in the third inning.
Woodmansee’s two-run homer into left field with two outs in the top of the first scored senior outfielder Jake Peevyhouse from first, who hit a line drive single two batters earlier.
The scoring continued for the Maroon as junior outfielder Christopher Beall collected his second RBI of the series with a sacrifice fly in the third inning to increase Maroon’s lead, 3-0. Peevyhouse scored twice for Maroon, including the eventual game-winning run on Beall’s sacrifice to center field.
Gold answered back in the bottom of the frame when sophomore catcher Brian Serven hit a two-run double to left field that scored redshirt senior right fielder Trever Allen and junior center fielder Johnny Sewald and brought them within one, 3-2. Aggressive base running set up the play as Sewald stole second base after he reached on a walk, and Allen hit a single that not only allowed Sewald to advance to third, but allowed him to get to second to put Gold in scoring position.
Gold starting freshman right-hander Ryan Hingst (0-1) took the loss in his Sun Devil debut.
First pitch for game three of the series is Thursday, Nov. 20 at 3 p.m. at Phoenix Muni with batting practice 30 minutes before. Admission and parking are free.
