Pac-12 announces women’s basketball players of the week
SAN FRANCISCO - WASHINGTON’s Jazmine Davis was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week, while STANFORD’s Kaylee Johnson was tabbed the Freshman of the Week, as announced by the Conference on Monday.
Senior guard Jazmine Davis (San Jose, Calif.) averaged 25.0 points, while leading the Huskies to three wins to clinch the Cancun Challlenge title, earning tournament MVP honors. Davis went for 24 points, while converting 11-of-12 free throws to help UW upset Florida State, a team that had receivd votes to be ranked each week of the season, 80-68. In the second game she dropped 25 points while also dishing out six assists to knock off Hartford, 81-70. In game three, Davis caught fire in the first half, hitting five-of-five three point attempts to score 22 in the first half. She finished with 26 points as Washington blew out Furman, 101-69.
Cardinal forward Kaylee Johnson (Benicia, Calif.) earns Freshman of the Week honors on her birthday after averaging 11.8 rebounds per game in Stanford’s four games last week. In the Cardinal’s 70-65 win over New Mexico, the freshman registered her first-career double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 22 rebounds against the Lobos. The 22 boards were the most ever in a single-game in Stanford history. Her season average of 11.0 rebounds per game is the highest of any freshman in the nation.
A player of the week has been selected every week since 1986-87, the first year the Conference sponsored women’s sports. A freshman of the week was first selected in 2012-13.
Washington hits the road for match ups with Seattle on Thursday at 7 p.m. PT and at Portland at 12 p.m. PT on Sunday. Stanford returns home from Hawaii this week and is off until its game Sunday December 16 against Santa Clara.
