Cougar Football Staff Announces Additions

Jan 27, 2015

PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State University Head Football Coach Mike Leach announced Tuesday that Eric Mele has been named special teams coordinator and Brian Odom has been added in a defensive quality control position.

Mele was elevated to interim special teams coordinator midway through the 2014 season after serving in an offensive quality control position. Leach has removed the interim label and Mele heads into the 2015 season as one of the nine full-time assistant coaches.

“Eric did a nice job coming in midway through last season,” said Leach. “He is organized, hard-working, energetic and has a great rapport with the players.”

Odom arrives at WSU following three seasons at the University of Houston where he served as Co-Director of Sports Performance. Prior to Houston he spent seven seasons at the University of Arizona in a similar position, focusing on the development of the Wildcat football team. His coaching career began as a graduate assistant at Missouri, where he worked with current Cougar defensive coordinator Alex Grinch.

“Brian brings a great work ethic and an experienced football mind to our staff,” said Leach. ”He has been a part of football staffs that have seen a great deal of success and he will be an asset for our program.”

A native of Ada, Oklahoma, Odom was a running back at Oklahoma and Southeastern Oklahoma State.
