California’s Green Selected Freshman of the Week

SAN FRANCISCO - ARIZONA’s Candice Warthen was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week, while CALIFORNIA’s Gabby Green was tabbed the Freshman of the Week, as announced by the Conference on Monday.

Senior guard Candice Warthen (Warrenton, Ga.) netted a game-winning shot with three seconds remaining to lead Arizona to a 60-57 win over No. 12 Stanford. Last week, Warthen averaged 18.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. She dropped 17 points and added an assist and two rebounds in the Wildcats’ 65-46 loss to California, before scoring 19 and taking down nine rebounds in the team’s win over Stanford. The victory snapped the Wildcats’ 24-game losing streak to Stanford.

California freshman Gabby Green (Oakland, Calif.) led the Golden Bears to a desert sweep with wins over Arizona, 65-46, and No. 10 Arizona State, 50-49. Green averaged 10.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 5.5 assists, 2.5, blocks and 2.5 steals in the two games. In the win over ASU, Green took over point guard duties in the game’s final minutes after All-American point guard Brittany Boyd left the game with a head injury. With Green at the helm, the Bears held on for their first win over an AP Top-10 team since 2013.

A player of the week has been selected every week since 1986-87, the first year the Conference sponsored women’s sports. A freshman of the week was first selected in 2012-13.

Arizona will travel for a game at Oregon on Friday, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. PT, while California plays its next game on Thursday, Feb. 12 at 8 p.m. PT at home against UCLA. Both games will appear on Pac-12 Networks.
