PREVIEW
Boulder Country Club in Boulder, Colo., will be the site of the 2015 Pac-12 Women’s Golf Championships on April 20-22, and will feature some of the top collegiate golf teams and individuals in the country.

The Pac-12 dominates the polls as league teams hold down the top three spots in Golfweek’s Top-25, led by No. 1 WASHINGTON, No. 2 USC and No. 3 UCLA. In all six league teams are among the top 20 in the Golfweek rankings, including No. 7 ARIZONA, No. 14 ARIZONA STATE and No. 17 STANFORD.  Golfstat’s rankings peg USC as the No. 1 team in the nation, followed by No. 3 UCLA, No. 6 Arizona, No. 8 Washington, No. 16 Stanford and No. 18 Arizona State.

Individually, USC junior Kyung Kim comes in at No. 3 in Golfweek’s individual rankings to lead the list of 18 Pac-12 golfers who are currently listed among the top 50 collegiate golfers in the nation. At No. 9 in Golfstat’s individual rankings, Kim paces a group of 15 Pac-12 golfers among the top 50. Absent from the statistical rankings is USC senior Doris Chen, the defending NCAA champion. The Trojan’s top golfer has not yet played in enough events to qualify for the statistical rankings.

USC looks to continue their tradition of excellence as a team. The Trojans have a roster full of all-stars, including Chen (Bradenton, Fla.) who became the fourth-consecutive Trojan to walk away with the individual NCAA championship last season. Kim (Chandler, Ariz.), currently ranked No. 9 nationally by Golfstat with a 71.95 scoring average, and former national champion Annie Park (Levittown, N.Y.) with a 72.55 scoring average, are two of the five Trojans ranked in the top 50. 

Washington, Golfweek’s No. 1 team, set a new school record with six team wins this season.  The Huskies’ small roster has not been an issue as they finished in the top six in all but one tournament they entered. They are lead by senior Jennifer Yang (Busan, South Korea) who is averaging 72.26, and recorded her first individual career win at the Bay Area Invite in March. The Dawgs will be hungry for revenge and looking to earn that unanimous No. 1 ranking they’ve been chasing all season.  

With a national third place ranking in both polls, UCLA has earned the two-seed for the conference tournament. Alison Lee’s departure to the LPGA after the fall has left big shoes to be filled, but senior Erynne Lee (Silverdale, Wash.) and sophomore Bronte Law (Stockport, England) are up for the challenge. With a combined ten top 10 finishes this season, both Bruins are expected to finish at the top of the Pac-12.

ARIZONA enters the Pac-12 Championship on a roll. The Wildcats kicked off the month of March with a win at the SunTrust Gator Invitational, followed by a 2nd place finish at the Wildcat Invitational and another team championship at the PING/ASU Invitational. Arizona has finished fourth or better in eight of nine tournaments during the 2014-15 season. Senior Manon Gidali (Paris, France), junior Lindsay Weaver (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and freshman Krystal Quihuis (Tucson, Ariz.) are three of the Wildcats’ most consistent performers. 

ARIZONA STATE will be the Pac-12’s fifth seed. Sophomore Monica Vaughn (Reedsport, Ore.) will arrive in Colorado after winning her first collegiate title at the 2015 PING/ASU Invitational this past Sunday, finishing 6-under 210 (69-69-72). Vaughn paces the Devils with a 72.27 scoring average, while senior Noemi Jimenez (Malaga, Spain) follows with a 72.79 scoring average. 

STANFORD, the defending Pac-12 Champions, were a surprising upset at the 2014 Championship and return four individuals who were key to last year’s success. Juniors Mariah Stackhouse (Riverdale, Ga.) and Lauren Kim (Los Altos, Calif.) are expected to be at the front of that charge with 72.61 and 72.57 scoring averages to rank No. 32 and No. 36 respectively. 

Finishing on a high note, OREGON clinched one final team win in at the Silverado Showdown this past weekend. This was the Ducks’ fifth straight top 5 finish this spring. Senior Cassy Isagawa (Wailuku, Hawai’i) and sophomore Cathleen Santoso (Sydney, Australia) will be important to Oregon’s success this week in Boulder. 

CALIFORNIA’s fate will fall on the shoulders of sophomore Lucia Gutierrez (Lima, Peru) and junior Hannah Suh (San Jose, Calif). Suh had an impressive fall finishing as the team’s highest individual scorer in five of six appearances. Gutierrez has hit her stride as of late including a second-place finish at the BYU Entrada Classic and medalist honors at the Silverado Invitational.  

Pac-12 Championships host COLORADO has finished every spring tournament in the top 10 or better. This young team is lead by sophomore Esther Lee (Los Alamitos, Calif), who is currently ranked No. 47 according to Golfstat. With some help from freshman teammate, Brittany Fan (Pearl City, Hawaii), the future looks promising for the Buffs.

With seven top 10 finishes, including a second-place spot at the Silverado Showdown last Sunday, OREGON STATE has found their stride this season. Under the leadership of new head coach Sammie Chergo, the Beavers seem to be improving every day. Throughout the season, multiple players have stepped up to lead the team, but watch for senior Alicia Yoo (Port Coquitlam, B.C.), junior Ashlee Pickerell (Salem, Ore), and junior Chelsea Saelee (Seattle, Wash.) to make some noise amongst their conference peers.

WASHINGTON STATE has been facing talented nationally ranked opponents all season, so the Pac-12 Championships will a great test for their leadership. The Cougars have compiled six top 10 finishes this season, and Washington natives senior Kristen Rue (Gig Harbor, Wash) and freshman Alivia Brown (Gig Harbor, Wash) are great complements to the dynamic roster the Cougars will bring to the competition next week.
