Mason Leads Cal to 4-0 Shutout of Arizona

TUCSON, ARIZ. – The Golden Bears have done it again, utilizing outstanding pitching and defense to shut down the Pac-12's top offensive squad, Arizona, shutting out the Wildcats, 4-0, behind the effort of 6-7 junior right-hander Ryan Mason Saturday night at Hi Corbett Field in Tucson. Mason (5-2) had one of the best outings of his career, throwing 8.0 innings with five hits, one walk and two strikeouts. Arizona had entered the series with a conference leading .313 team batting average.

With the win No. 16 ranked Cal improves to 25-14 overall and 12-8 in the Pac-12. Arizona drops to 24-16 and 9-11 in league play. The Bears won the first game of the series, 3-1, Friday night.

Offensively, Cal got a big boost in the fourth inning on junior left fielder Devin Pearson's two-run double down the left field line. David Esquer's squad added two more runs in the fifth inning on an RBI single by senior first baseman Chris Paul and a sacrifice fly by freshman catcher Brett Cumberland.

Pearson was had an impressive defensive play in the bottom of the fourth inning when he threw Arizona's JJ Matijevic out at home plate from left field.

Ryan Mason has never been better than he was tonight,” said Esquer. “This was a huge road performance for us. It was a big two run double by Devin Pearson to give us the lead. And, we again played great defense to support our pitching.”

Sophomore right-hander Alex Schick pitched the bottom ninth, only yielding a one-out single before retiring the final two batters.

The Bears will be attempting to sweep the series when they play the final of the three-game set Sunday at 12 p.m. at Hi Corbett Field.
