Bears Net Baker?s Dozen All-Americans

BERKELEY – Thirteen Golden Bears have received a total of 16 honors with the announcement of the 2014-15 All-Americans to end July. Six California players, including four new honorees, were awarded full All-America recognition in 15s, bringing that total number in Cal history to 131 all-time.

Outgoing co-captains Jake Anderson and Alec Gletzer, who received their second and fourth full 15s All-America recognitions, respectively, were joined by newcomers James Kondrat, Anthony Salaber, Sione Sina and George Vrame in that group.

Kondrat's first full All-America recognition follows his honorable mention for 2013-14, while their selections were the first AA honors for Salaber, Sina and Vrame. Anderson was also a 2012-13 All-American in 15s, while Gletzer has earned four straight full 15s AA nods going back to 2011-12.

Salaber was also named a first-team 7s All-American for the first time in his collegiate career, joining first-time 7s All-America selection Andrew Battaglia, the Bears' leading try scorer during their 21-1 7s run to their third straight national title in 7s, and Anderson, who earned 7s AA honors in 2012-13 and a 7s honorable mention for 2011-12. Gletzer also earned a 7s honorable mention for 2014-15.

The second team and honorable mention honorees for 15s in 2014-15 include Paul Bosco, earning his second such honor on the second team (also 2012-13) in addition to his 2011-12 7s All-America and 2013-14 7s honorable mention accolades; first-time honorees Nicklas Boyer, Michael Bush and Scott Walsh on the second team; and Harry Adolphus, Russell Webb and Battaglia, who were named 15s honorable mentions.

“There is a lot that goes into developing elite athletes, not the least of which is the desire and determination of the athlete,” said head coach Jack Clark. “Our boys on this list want to reach their potential, they want to know how good they can be, they want to excel. The credit belongs to them, but there is also a deep sense of satisfaction for our team and University.”

The 2015 Penn Mutual Collegiate Rugby Championship capped the competitive calendar for the Rugby Bears to close their 133rd year as the Blue and Gold earned their third straight national title in the same form of the sport going back into the Olympics at the 2016 Summer Games. Cal's 7s schedule, which also included its third straight PAC Rugby 7s championship, bookended a 17-2 spring 15s season that saw a third straight conference crown, a stout split of the “World Cup” series, a win over Saint Mary's and a comeback effort against BYU that fell just three points short of the 15s title at the Varsity Cup final.

The University of California congratulates all the student-athletes whose rugby brought them recognition as 2013-14 All-Americans, an honor carried by all the former Bears whose national team careers are poised to take them into this autumn's Rugby World Cup and the next Summer Olympics.
