TULSA, Okla. ? Andre Goransson capped California's campaign in the Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships with a loss in the main draw semifinals on Sunday. Seeded No. 9-16 and ranked 22nd in the ITA preseason poll, the Golden Bear junior fell to Tulane's fourth-seeded and 10th-ranked Dominik Koepfer, 6-4, 6-4, at the University of Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center.

“Andre had a great week of tennis,” Cal associate head coach Tyler Browne said. “He really stepped up and played the game well. Our focus has been to commit to our decisions before the point begins. He did that and proved to the country that he's among the best college players out there.”

Goransson was one of three Bears who competed at the All-American Championships. The Bears included junior Florian Lakat, who played in main draw singles and paired with Goransson in main draw doubles, as well as junior Filip Bergevi, who fell in qualifying singles one round away from playing for a spot in the main draw.

Lakat and Goransson lost in the doubles opening round of 32, while Lakat advanced to the singles round of 16.

“Flo has a big heart,” Browne said of Lakat. “He was down a break in the third set twice before storming back for wins. I'm proud of the way he fought. He's beginning to commit to his shots more and more, and I believe he's going to be a big factor for this team in the spring.”

Bergevi lost to Northwestern's Konrad Ziebe, 7-6(7), 6-2, on Tuesday in the qualifying second round, and the Wildcat went onto qualify for the main draw out of their part of the bracket.

Browne added, “Filip had a tough match that I know he wished he could have back. It's a tough lesson to learn, but I trust he's improving with every match he plays. I look forward to seeing him respond well at regionals in two weeks.”

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. ? Billy Griffith captured the Flight A Singles title on Sunday at the UCSB Classic. The Cal sophomore defeated Oregon's Daan Maasland, 6-2, 6-3, as the Gauchos' tournament came to a close. A Bear has won the top-flight singles crown for two straight years, as senior Mads Engsted took home the title last season.

Cal next competes in the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships from Oct. 22-26 in Seattle.
