BERKELEY – Riding a late-season surge into the postseason, California earned the 13th seed and the right to host first- and second-round matches on Tuesday, when the NCAA announced the 64-team field for its national team tournament. The Golden Bears – ranked 12th in the latest Oracle/ITA poll – will play Army West Point at 12 p.m. while Mississippi takes on Denver at 9 a.m. on May 14 in the NCAA first round at the Hellman Tennis Complex. The two winners will play in the NCAA second round on May 15 at 1 p.m. for the right to advance to Tulsa, Oklahoma, for the rest of the NCAA Championship.

The University of Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center will host the NCAA team tournament from the round of 16 beginning on May 19 to the May 24 final. The Michael D. Case Tennis Center will also host the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships from May 25-30. The NCAA will announce the fields for the two individual tournaments on Wednesday on NCAA.com.

Cal claimed its 17th straight appearance in the NCAA team tournament under head coach Peter Wright and its 35th overall bid to the postseason with Tuesday's announcement. This marks the first time since 2012 that the Bears – who are currently unbeaten at home at 9-0 – will host the opening rounds of the NCAA tournament.

Coming off of an appearance in the Pac-12 Championship final, Conference runner-up Cal (17-6) earned an at-large berth into NCAAs. The Bears will be facing Army West Point (18-8) for the first time. The unranked Black Knights are automatic qualifiers into NCAAs as the Patriot League champions. Ole Miss (18-7), ranked 29th, claimed an at-large berth into the postseason. Denver (17-7), ranked 48th, claimed an automatic bid as the Summit League champion.

“I'm excited about the NCAA tennis tournament coming to Berkeley,” said Wright, now in his 23rd season at the helm of his alma mater. “All of our guys are excited and looking forward to the challenges ahead. Army, Mississippi and Denver are all strong teams and have had incredible seasons to qualify for the NCAAs. It's a privilege to host the first two rounds at Cal, and our players, fans and the entire men's and women's tennis team community look forward to exciting matches at the Hellman courts.”

“It's awesome,” Cal junior Filip Bergevi said. “This year is the first time hosting for me. It's going to be fun.”

The top-seeded Cal women's tennis team is hosting NCAA first- and second-round matches May 13-14. On May 14, the women's second-round match – scheduled for 3 p.m. – is the third and final event of the day at Hellman.
