Charlie Moore Signs With Cal Basketball Program

BERKELEY – Charlie Moore, one of the premier playmakers in the country, has signed a financial aid agreement to attend the University of California and play basketball for the Golden Bears. A 5-11, 170-pound point guard out of Chicago's Morgan Park High School, he earned 2016 Mr. Basketball honors for the state of Illinois this past year and is considered one of the top 75 recruits for the current class of seniors.

“I'm really excited to have Charlie Moore join our basketball program,” Cal head coach Cuonzo Martin said. “He's a skilled point guard with the toughness to attack the rim and make plays for his teammates. Charlie is a guy who can make big shots, especially from the 3-point line, and he has the ability to score in bunches. He's a winner and has won at a high level with his high school team as well as with his AAU team, the Mac Irvin Fire. Charlie continues the legacy of talented guys who have come out of Chicago to play for Cal.”

Moore is listed as the No. 61 player in the country, the No. 14 point guard and the top player in Illinois by ESPN.com. In addition, he is rated No. 55 overall by Rivals.com, No. 65 by Scout.com and No. 71 by 247Sports.com. Each service gives him a four-star rating.

The Chicago Sun-Times Player of the Year as a senior, Moore averaged 28 points, 7 assists and 5 steals per game this past season. He led Morgan Park HS to the Class 3A state titles as a freshman and sophomore. During his junior season, he contributed 25 ppg, 6 apg and 5 spg when Morgan Park finished third in the state tournament.

Moore joins a list of Golden Bears from Chicago who have played a major role with the program in recent years, including guard Dennis Gates (1999-2002), forward Sean Lampley (1998-2001) and guard Jerome Randle (2007-10). Both Lampley (2001) and Randle (2010) were voted conference Player of the Year during their tenures in Berkeley.

Moore becomes the third addition to Cal's recruiting class for the 2016-17 season. Don Coleman, a 6-4 guard, will be a sophomore for the Bears for the upcoming campaign after averaging 19.9 ppg this past year at Lawson State Community College in Birmingham, Alabama, while 6-3 guard Grant Mullins comes to the Bears as a graduate transfer from Columbia after contributing 13.3 ppg and earning second-team All-Ivy League honors for the Lions in 2015-16.
