BERKELEY – After a successful start to the season at Edwards Stadium, the Cal women's soccer team looks to keep its momentum rolling on the road, visiting San Francisco on Friday evening and UC Davis on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Bears (2-0-0, 0-0-0 Pac-12) will head across the Bay Bridge on Friday, taking on the Dons (1-1-0, 0-0-0 WCC) at 7 p.m. PT at Negoesco Stadium. Cal's road weekend continues on Sunday, squaring off against UC Davis (0-2-0, 0-0-0 Big West) at 1 p.m. PT at Aggie Soccer Stadium.

At 2-0-0, the Golden Bears are off to their best start since 2014, when they started the season 6-0-0. However, this weekend marks the first road test for the Bears, who went 5-3-2 in away matches last season, including a 2-2-1 mark in non-conference play.

LAST TIME OUT
Cal opened the 2017 season with a pair of 2-1 victories at home, besting UC Irvine on Friday evening before upending No. 24 Santa Clara on Sunday afternoon. Sophomore striker Abi Kim paced the Bears with three goals on the weekend, registering her first career multi-goal game with a brace against the Anteaters. The 2016 Pac-12 All-Freshman selection continued her production against the Broncos, tying the match in the 80th minute off a feed from junior Miranda Nild and drawing a foul to set up the game-winning penalty kick. Redshirt senior Kelly Fitzgerald, Cal's top returning scorer from the 2016 season, was automatic from the spot, burying the penalty in the 89th minute to secure the victory for the Golden Bears.

For her efforts over the opening weekend, Kim was named the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week and earned a spot on the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week. With three goals already on the year, Kim has already matched her scoring total from 2016 (3 goals, 3 assists).

Defensively, the Bears held their opponents to just 14 shots over the weekend - six of which were on target - and conceded only one goal in the run of play, as UC Irvine scored on a penalty kick. Goalkeeper Emily Boyd and defenders Indigo Gibson and Emily Smith went the distance for the Golden Bears, playing all 180 minutes over the weekend.

Smith – a member of the United States National team at the 2016 FIFA Under-17 Women's World Cup in Jordan – is one of six freshmen who made their Golden Bear debuts over the weekend. Daisy Cleverley and Emma Westin also earned their first career start while rookies Kailee Gifford, Caroline Clark, and Luca Deza provided valuable minutes off the bench. Cal's 11-member freshman class was ranked No. 3 in the nation by TopDrawerSoccer.com.

SCOUTING THE DONS
San Francisco plays its first home game of the year on Friday, looking to bounce back from a 1-0 loss to Texas Tech on Sunday at the New Mexico Soccer Complex in Albuquerque. The Dons conceded a penalty kick in the 105th minute, which the Red Raiders converted, handing San Francisco its first loss of the year. The Dons opened the 2017 with a 2-1 victory over New Mexico, behind goals from Samantha Jehnings and Sonja Giraud. Giraud finished second on the team in scoring last season with five goals while Jehnings, a WCC All-Freshman selection in 2015, is back after missing all of 2016 due to injury. The Dons were picked to finish sixth in the West Coast Conference Preseason Coaches Poll.

Friday's match will be the 23rd meeting all-time between the Dons and Golden Bears. Cal holds a 17-3-2 advantage overall in the series and is unbeaten in the last 12 meetings between the teams, including a 4-1 victory last season at Edwards Stadium.

SCOUTING THE AGGIES
After suffering a pair of one-goal defeats on the road, the Aggies look to get back on track on their home turf, hosting Portland on Friday before Sunday's tilt against the Golden Bears. The Aggies dropped their season opener to defending National Champion USC, 2-1. Senior Mandy McKeegan tallied her first career goal to cut the deficit to one, curling in a free kick against the Women of Troy. The Aggies dropped another close decision on Sunday, falling to San Diego State, 1-0. UC Davis returns 10 letterwinners from last season's squad that finished fifth in the Big West.

Sunday will be the 12th meeting between the Golden Bears and the Aggies. Cal is unbeaten in their previous 11 meetings, boasting 10-0-1 record in the series. The teams met last season in Berkeley, resulting in a 4-0 victory for the Golden Bears.

NEXT UP
Following Sunday's game at UC Davis, the Bears will return to Edwards Stadium, hosting Texas on September 1 at 2 p.m. PT and Long Beach State at 4 p.m. on September 3. Both matches will be double-headers with the Cal men's soccer team, who face Northeastern at 4:30 p.m. on Friday and Creighton at 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
