Cal Takes 3rd With All Frosh-Sophs On TI

Developmental Side Finishes 5-1 At WC7s

TREASURE ISLAND, Calif. – With an all-freshman-and-sophomore roster representing the University of California, the Golden Bears beat San Diego State in Sunday's cup quarterfinal, 29-0, then rebounded from a semifinal setback against Central Washington to beat Utah Valley, 22-7, for third place Sunday at the West Coast Collegiate 7s

Sophomore Christian Dyer was the Bears' top scorer on the weekend, with 40 points on four tries and 10 conversions (10-for-17), including a try in the last match of Cal's 5-1 weekend for a developmental side that improved over the course of the tournament.

"Overall, not too bad," offered head coach Jack Clark. "Lots of lessons, of which we are appreciative."

George Salter, another sophomore who helped control tempo with reliable possession in the air before an injury ended his weekend against Utah Valley, said of the squad, "At times we showed some really good 7s. We were fortunate to represent our University this weekend. Whether freshmen or sophomores, or any class year, when we put on the jersey, we are Cal."

"It's a big responsibility to put on the Blue and Gold," said sophomore Keanu Andrade, who captained the Bears on the weekend. "We definitely showed improvement and finished on a good note."

Sophomore Thomas Spradling called it "disappointing" to drop a 26-12 decision to Central Washington but added, "Overall, it's very good to have gotten the minutes for so many of these young players at this tournament."

"We had some good performances, none better than Tommy Spradling," added coach Clark. "He's just a tough, hardworking kid."

Cal will now prepare for its final event of the autumn semester, the PAC 7s conference championship held November 11-12 at the University of Arizona, where the Golden Bears will field their varsity side.
