2018 Pac-12 Football Media Day: Chip Kelly appreciates TV work, relishes return to coaching

UCLA head coach Chip Kelly is making his much-anticipated return to the coaching ranks this fall after spending a season with ESPN as a football analyst.

So, when he sat down with Pac-12 Networks' Mike Yam and Yogi Roth at Pac-12 Football Media Day on Wednesday, you know they had to sneak in some television talk.

“I actually enjoyed being a TV guy,” Kelly admitted. “It’s like anything in life: If you’re around good people, you have a lot of fun. We had a blast on Saturdays in Bristol.”

But it sounds like one year on the ESPN set was more than enough time away from coaching for Kelly, who comes to Westwood following stints at Oregon, the Philadelphia Eagles and the San Francisco 49ers.

“You didn’t have practice, so you didn’t have an opportunity to watch film, get ready, go to meetings and then get ready to go on the field," Kelly said of his break from coaching. "That’s what you miss the most, the day-to-day aspects of it. But from a film standpoint, I had access to everything. So I got more film last year from being in television than I did while I was at a school. I got a chance to watch everybody.”

One can only assume having film on “everybody” will serve him well in his first year back on the Pac-12 sidelines.
