Two Through to Quarterfinals Again

  • For the sixth time in league history (2002, 2010, 2013, 2019, 2021, 2023), including three times in the past five seasons, a pair of Pac-12 Men's Soccer programs have advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals.
  • OREGON STATE (10-5-5) and STANFORD (11-3-5) both registered lopsided road upsets in the NCAA Third Round over the weekend to put themselves a match away from the NCAA College Cup in Louisville, Ky., Dec. 8 and 11.
  • The Pac-12 and the ACC (three teams - Clemson, North Carolina, Notre Dame) are the only leagues with multiple teams remaining in the tournament.

Recapping the Third-Round Routs

  • Oregon State equaled the largest margin of victory and goals scored in Conference postseason history with a 7-1 thrashing of No. 6 seed SMU on Saturday.
    • The six-goal margin equaled Stanford in 2000 (6-0 vs. UIC) and UCLA in 2002 (7-1 vs. Penn State) for the largest victory, while equaling the 2002 Bruins for most goals in a postseason match.
    • The Beavers scored seven unanswered goals after allowing the opener in the 7th minute to post one of the most one-sided victories in tournament history. Five different players scored goals, led by braces from both Logan Farrington and Dante Williams, and nine different players registered a point, highlighted by Farrington's six (2g/2a) and Williams' five (2g/1a), against the Mustangs.
    • Farrington earned National Team of the Week recognition from College Soccer News and Top Drawer Soccer for the second straight week and third time this season, while Williams joined Farrington on the TDS National Team.
    • Through its program-record three NCAA Tournament victories this postseason, OSU has outscored its opponents 12-2 for a +10 goal differential that is double the next closest team in the field (Stanford +5).
  • No. 16 seed Stanford recorded the biggest victory over a No. 1 overall seed in NCAA Tournament history with a 3-0 rout at Marshall on Sunday.
    • The Cardinal were clinical against the Thundering Herd, scoring on each of its three shots on goal, while limiting the hosts to just a pair of shots on target.
    • Stanford had three different goal scorers and points from eight different players, including an assist from defender Noah Adnan to help him earn National Player of the Week honors from Top Drawer Soccer. Adnan, who was also recognized by College Soccer News, was joined on the TDS National Team by midfielder Will Reilly.

Gone to Carolina

  • Both Oregon State and Stanford will have to repeat their Third Round feats - go on the road and defeat top-10 seeded opponents - in order to advance to the NCAA College Cup, and both will have to go through the Carolinas to do so.
  • Oregon State will visit No. 3 seed North Carolina (11-3-7) for the second meeting in series history. The Beavers and Tar Heels have met one other time, a 5-1 victory for No. 3 nationally ranked UNC in Chapel Hill in Sept. 2011 - a match OSU led 1-0 at halftime.
    • With its second consecutive road rout this postseason, OSU improved to 6-2-2 on the road this season; UNC will counter with a 7-1-4 mark at Dorrance Field.
    • OSU is looking to join a short list of teams to advance through three road matches since the NCAA Tournament expanded to its current 48-team format in 2001 (* made College Cup) - UIC 2007, Saint Mary's 2011, San Diego 2012, UMBC 2014 (4)*, Akron 2018*, Creighton 2022*.
    • A victory over UNC would send the Beavers to their first-ever NCAA College Cup to face either Indiana or No. 2 seed Notre Dame.
    • Oregon State narrowly missed reaching the 2021 College Cup, with Clemson advancing past OSU from the quarterfinals on penalties (4-3) following a 1-1 draw. The Tigers eventually defeated Washington, 2-0, to claim the national title.
  • Stanford travels to No. 9 seed Clemson (11-3-5) to meet a familiar postseason foe. The Cardinal and Tigers have met three times previously (2002, 2015, 2019), all three matchups coming in the NCAA Tournament and two of them in the NCAA Quarterfinals.

    • Stanford remained unbeaten on the road (4-0-4) this season with the rout of Marshall; Clemson is 10-1-2 at home this season.
    • A victory over Clemson would send the Cardinal to its eighth NCAA College Cup all-time, including its seventh under Pac-12 sport sponsorship, to meet either No. 5 seed West Virginia or LMU.

  • Pac-12 Player and Offensive Player of the Year Logan Farrington has carried his torrid scoring campaign over into the postseason, where he leads all players in the NCAA Tournament with 11 points, four goals and three assists.
  • Farrington enters the quarterfinals within striking distance of the NCAA Tournament record of 15 points set in 1978 (Thompson Usiyan, Appalachian State, 7g/1a).
  • Combined with his 11 goals and 26 points during the regular season, Farrington has climbed into the top 5 in single-season goals (15, T-4th) and points (37, T-2nd) in Conference history.
  • For the season, Farrington is fourth in NCAA Division I in points (37) and tied for third nationally in goals (15).
