No. 1 Arizona State and No. 6 Stanford sit on top after day two of the Pac-12 Men's Swimming Championships

No. 1 ARIZONA STATE took home all but three podium finishes on day two of the Pac-12 Men’s Championship, sweeping two of the three individual events. The top-ranked team leads the competition by just under 100 points. 

No. 6 STANFORD climbed into second place with No. 2 CALIFORNIA dropping into third. On the night, Championship meet records, one Pac-12 all around record and one NCAA record were broken.   

500 Freestyle: 

  • The Sun Devils continued their momentum from Wednesday, starting day two of the Championships with a first and second place podium finish. 
  • Leon Marchand took the top spot, swimming a whole three seconds ahead of the competition, setting a new NCAA record in an event he only swam once this past season. The 4:06.18 finish broke a three-year old record and gave Marchand his 13th Pac-12 Championship title and first in the 500 Free event. 
  • Fellow Sun Devil Zalan Sarkany swam a 4:09.19, surpassing his personal best and the Pac-12 Championship meet record, marking the second-fastest time in the nation this season. 
  • Freshman Cardinal Rex Maurer helped catapult the Cardinal into the No. 3 spot after swimming a 4:12.58 to take home third place. 

200 IM:

  • Sun Devil Hubert Kos became a Pac-12 Champion for the first time in his career, swimming one one-hundredth of a second faster than his teammate who led the country (Marchand, 1:38.78). He finished with a new personal best and the fastest time in the country this season clocking in at 1:38.77.
  • Helping complete the Sun Devil sweep was Arizona State’s Owen McDonald, who swam a personal best 1:39.35, and David Schlicht who finished third in a swift 1:41.68. 
  • The Devils now hold the top-3 times in the event in the country this season. 

50 Free: 

  • For the second time this week Arizona State completed a sweep as they took home first, second and third in the 50 Free. 
  • With the fourth-fastest time in the country this season, Jack Dolan became a two-time 50 free Champion with a Pac-12 Championship meet and Arizona State record time of 18.61. The sophomore shaved .25 off his 2023 Championship time.
  • In his first Pac-12 Championship competition, freshman Ilya Kharun is now a two-time podium finisher after securing second in the 50 Free with a personal-best time of 18.84.
  • Wrapping up the individual competition was Jonny Kulow, who finished third with a time of 18.92. 

200 Freestyle Relay 

  • With their fourth Pac-12 Championship record time, the Arizona State Sun Devils dusted the 200 Free Relay with a final time of 1:14.59, the third-fastest in the country this season.
  • In their third relay podium finish, Stanford’s Jonathon TanAndrei MinakovRafael Gu and Avery Voss took home second, swimming a 1:15.68 to tip the Cardinal into second place. 
  • Arizona’a Tommy PalmerSeth MillerJack Donovan and Ralph Daleeiden Ciuferri finished the night with a third-place 1:15.97 swim.
