Arizona State takes 200-point lead on day three of 2024 Pac-12 Men's Swimming Championships

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. -- No. 1 ARIZONA STATE's lead ballooned to over 200 points after the Sun Devils increased their win total to 11 events on the week. 

No. 6 STANFORD continues to hold onto its second-place spot after tallying 100 points between the five evening events with three podium finishes. 

No. 2 CALIFORNIA rounds out third, highlighted by Liam Bell who secured a 100 Breast victory that broke the nine-event Sun Devil win streak. 

400 IM:

  • The Sun Devils completed their third individual event sweep of the Championships after taking home the top-3 spots in the 400 IM. 
  • Leon Marchand remained undefeated after the 400 IM competition, swimming the fastest time in the country this season and taking home first with a time of 3:34.66. The win marks his third title in a row.
  • After taking second in the 200 IM on Wednesday, senior David Schlicht grabbed another run-up finish, swimming a 3:37.97 for the third-fastest time in the country this season.  
  • Freshman Rex Maurer swam a third place time, his second of the Championship, clocking in at 3:38.10. 

100 Fly

  • After rounding up a relay win and individual runner-up finish early on in the Championship, freshman Sun Devil Ilya Kharun became a Pac-12 Champion in the 100 Fly. Posting a 44.32 NCAA A Standard, the newcomer set a new Sun Devil record.
  • Cardinal duo Rafael Gu and Aaron Sequeria captured the remaining podium finishes with Gu swimming 45 seconds even and Sequeria swimming just over at 45.09. 

200 Free:

  • Topping his 2023 Pac-12 Championship runner-up finish was Sun Devil Patrick Sammon who extended Arizona State’s win streak to nine events and added their 14th podium finish. His first individual Championship title came by way of a 1:31.87 finish, good for seventh-best in the country this season.
  • Freshman Henry McFadden took home the runner-up spot with a personal best that topped his previous record by almost a second. The Cardinal swam a 1:32.03 for the second place spot in the competition and in Stanford history. 
  • Owen McDonald secured third for the 15th Sun Devil podium finish, swimming a 1:32.06.

100 Breast:

  • Tying for the top time in the country this season was California graduate Liam Bell who earned his first career individual Championship title with a time of 50.89. 
  • The Golden Bear broke the Sun Devils' nine-event win streak, with the Devils being shut out of the top-3 completely. 
  • Stanford teammates, Ron Polonsky and Zhier Fan rounded out the top-three. Polonsky swam a season-best 51.17 while Fan clocked in a personal-best 51.29 finish.  

100 Back:

  • Now going two-for-two at the Championships was Sun Devil Hubert Kos who swam a 43.75 for fastest time of the year, a new Pac-12 Championship meet record and a new Arizona State record.
  • The sophomore is the only swimmer in the country to swim under 44 seconds this season.
  • ASU's Jack Dolan and Stanford's Aaron Sequeira earned their first individual podium finishes of the Championships after the Sun Devil swam a 45:15 and the Cardinal swam a personal-best 45.23. 

400 Medley Relay:

  • Just .18 seconds away from a new NCAA record was ASU’s Hubert KosLeon MarchandIlya Kharun and Jonny Kulow. Despite missing the NCAA time, the quad swam a 2:58.49 good for a new Pac-12 all around, Pac-12 Championship meet and Arizona State school record. 
  • Stanford’s Rex MaurerRon PolonskyRafael Gu and Luke Maurer swam their way to a NCAA A Standard with a time of 3:03.55.
  • Kai CrewLiam BellSamuel Quarles and Trent Frandson finished out day three with the Bears second relay podium finish of the Championship. The crew saw a 3:04.02 for a NCAA A Standard.
