Cal To Compete In Mt. SAC Relays

Apr 17, 2024
Mason Mangum is currently the 13th-ranked all-conditions men's long jumper in Division I.

BERKELEY – California track & field will compete as a team once again this week, sending athletes from all five event groups to the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays on April 18-20 at Hilmer Lodge Stadium in Walnut. Both the collegiate and elite divisions are chock-full of Golden Bears; the majority of the collegiate competitions will take place on Friday, while most of the elite events are scheduled for Saturday.

The only Bears set to compete on Thursday are sophomores Georgia McCorkle and Carolina Visca, both at 6:30 p.m. PT. McCorkle, who ranks sixth all time at Cal in the women's 3000m steeplechase, will test her mettle against a field of 27 other elite racers that includes Cal Baptist's Greta Karinauskaite, who is ranked No. 12 in the world this year. Visca, the reigning Italian champion and the school record-holder in the women's javelin, is set to match up against 13 other elite throwers, including countrywoman Federica Botter of UCLA, who is currently ranked fourth in Division I.

Friday will be the busiest day of the meet for Cal, with no fewer than 44 athletes competing across the various collegiate competitions. Nine entries currently hold spots on the Bears' all-time top-10 lists; the first of those to appear that day will be the men's 4x100m relay, which ranks second in program history, at 11:10 a.m. Other Friday entrants in Cal's top-10 include junior Asjah Atkinson (100m hurdles – 11:25 a.m.), Ryan Lacefield (400m – 12:15 p.m.), Kylie Hilton (Pole Vault A – 1 p.m.), Ali Sahaida (Pole Vault A – 1 p.m.), Makhaila Mills (100m – 1:15 p.m.), George Monroe (100m – 1:45 p.m.), Chase Williams (100m – 1:45 p.m.) and Aysha Shaheed (200m – 3:05 p.m.)

After the men's and women's collegiate hammer contests kick things off on Saturday, the Bears will follow up with a heavy presence in the remaining elite events, with all but three entries possessing program top-10 spots. Three of those – Amari Turner (Pole Vault – 2:20 p.m.), Caisa-Marie Lindfors (Discus – 3:30 p.m.) and Rowan Hamilton (Hammer – 4 p.m.) boast outdoor school records, while an additional five (pole vaulter Skyler Magula, hurdler Jada Hicks, high jumper Toby Lai, sprinter Aysha Shaheed and sprinter David Foster) own indoor program records. Sophomore Audrey Jacobs, the U23 Dutch record-holder in the hammer throw, and senior Jasmine Blair, who recently qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials in the discus, hope to improve their marks even further in their respective events.

The elite division will feature several additional names familiar to Cal fans, although those athletes will not be donning the Blue & Gold. World record-holder Mykolas Alekna, who is competing unattached while he prepares for the Olympic Games in Paris, is the top-billed name in the men's discus elite, while fellow junior Tyler Burns will compete unattached in the men's pole vault elite B section. Three of Cal's hammer throwing alumni – reigning world champion Camryn Rogers, Anna Purchase and Kegan Schroeter, will throw in the women's (Rogers, Purchase) and men's (Schroeter) hammer elite contests; volunteer assistant coach Elena Bruckner rounds out the group with a scheduled appearance in the women's discus elite.
