Buffs Wrap Up Day Three of Action at Mt. SAC

WALNUT, Calif. & GOLDEN – The Colorado men's and women's track and field teams had an action-packed day between meets at Mt. San Antonio College and Colorado School of Mines here Friday as the end of the week approaches.

Freshman Riley Ward led the Buffs with a hot start to the day in the women's high jump. She placed second out of 14 athletes in the event with a mark of 1.53m. Ward's second-place finish was the best placement of any Buff on day three of the Mt. SAC Relays.

While Ward was participating in the high jump, Matt Ward, Lars Atkinson and Lucas Williams took part in the men's discus throw. Ward managed a 10th-place mark of 49.00m to lead the Colorado throwers. Atkinson just missed out on the top-10, finishing 12th as Williams wasn't far behind, coming in 14th.

Later in the day, CU put five athletes on the line in the men's 400-meter dash. Ian Gilmore put out the best result of any Buff with an 11th-place finish in a time of 47.18. Shortly after in the men's 100-meter, Luc Andrada placed 14th out of 40 total sprinters. Johnny Homsy finished in 10.76 in which was his first time competing in the outdoor 100m as a collegiate athlete. 

The final set of races on the track for the Buffs were the men's and women's 400-meter hurdles events. On the women's side, Emma Pollak impressed with a fourth-place finish. She set a new personal record in the event after finishing in 58.99 while breaking her previous best which she set back in March.

For the men, Colton Romig led the charge for Colorado, coming in 10th. Next was Garrett Nelson in 12th followed by Danny Tragarz in 18th.

In the final event for the Buffs in Walnut, Calif. on Friday, Lauren Whyrick and Meghan Whyrick competed in the women's shot put. Lauren managed a 15th-place finish with a mark of 13.43m while Meghan placed 24th with a toss of 12.22m.

In Golden, Colo. at the Mines Kit Mayer Classic, Ames Newman was the only Colorado athlete to compete. He finished seventh in his first event of the day, the hammer throw, before competing in the discus throw later on. 

Newman also placed seventh in the discus throw and eighth in the shot put to finish out the day at Mines. 

The Buffs will see five of their throwers compete in the hammer throw on Saturday with the women's event starting at 10 a.m. MT and the men's at 1 p.m. In addition to the throwers, Abbey Glynn will race in the 400H before both Colorado relays take on the men's and women's 4x400-meter races.
