LAS CRUCES, N.M. — The No. 16 Arizona Wildcats (25-14) hammered 16 hits and three home runs en route to a 12-2 run-rule victory over the New Mexico State Aggies (17-23) on Wednesday night in Las Cruces.
Shortstop Mason White and third baseman Maddox Mihalakis both clubbed three-run home runs, while first baseman Tommy Splaine checked in with a two-run blast to account for two thirds of the Wildcats runs.
After the Aggies posted their only two runs of the game in the bottom of the sixth the Wildcats responded with their second crooked number of the evening in the top of the seventh, plating six to make it a 12-2 ballgame. Right-hander Casey Hintz shut the door in the bottom half of the inning to secure the mercy rule win.
Right-hander Raul Garayzar got the start in what amounted to a bullpen effort for Arizona; he went one inning and did not allow a run while not factoring into the decision. Freshman right-hander Bryce McKnight earned his first career win after tossing a scoreless bottom of the second inning. Righty Matthew Martinez also posted a pair of scoreless frames.
